I will be glad to try to help you, but first I need some more information:
Where do you live?
Are we talking day trips, weekend trips or longer?
In the Mid-Atlantic region, or elsewhere?
Over the past few years I have gotten all my grandchildren, now ages 11-5 skiing and snowboarding. Last year my then 3+ year old grandson took lessons and was able to handle blue trails to the bottom of Snowshoe mountain.
We have taken the grandkids to multiple mid-Atlantic areas, and some ski schools appear head and shoulders above others when working with young children.
Glad to help!

If willing to travel, nothing compares to Smuggler's Notch in vermont. Spend a week there and you will be amazed at how well your child skis afterwards. The kids learn but also have fun! Great terrain for parents as well

Where's home base?

I would stay away from the Snowtime resorts (Whitetail, Liberty, or Roundtop). Your kids will have a good time, but your wallet won't, which will keep you from taking them on their 2nd ski trip.

As first time skiers, you don't need a mega resort. I would take them to Massenutten or Bryce. If you want to drive a bit further, I would head to WISP. WISP has better snow, more terrain, and it has a resorty feel to it. WISP also has lots of other activities that will keep the kids entertained, plus they have a great ski school.

If you are talking about a day trip from the DC area I like Bryce for your situation. From intersection of 495 and 66 it is about 90 miles west. Old trip report:

Massanutten is a little farther from DC than Bryce, but may be worth the drive if the family wants to do other things like the waterpark. The ski school is wonderful. Need to make reservations early if going doing holidays. Having two carpets, one just for kids, and conveyor loading on the two lifts at the base makes it very friendly for beginners.

If parents and other members of your group can ski the two black runs off Lift 6, there won't ever be a lift line. Very nice on a holiday weekend. Especially since they are lit, as are all the other runs at M'nut.
