Anyone else worried by the long range?
Looking at the 7spring webcam, vs the weather outlook, Im actually thinking they may not be able to open again until mid-late to late December? This is crazy!
At the very best, we will have brown spots all over the place and VERY limited slopes open. BORING!
I have off from the 15th on to the 2nd, and REALLY would like to take the opportunity to use my damn season pass. Im in a 'use it or lose it' scenario with my time off, so it's not optional that I wait to use my time.
We will get a dumping of Powder from WV up to NY on the 2nd, you watch.
At the present time, I'm simply hoping that Greek Peak in NY can stay open until week before Christmas. The outlook is pretty cr@ptastic through the 11th.
All we can do is hope that the week after this one had a bad forecast and that things drastically change for the better toward winter weather actually being here.
I'm not changing my wife's tires over to winter tires just yet. I'm starting to sense that we are actually going to have a more crummy year than we did last year.

What weather resources are you using for 10+ forecasts?

Not to hit a person when they are down and beating themselves up, but that is about when the WV snow engine really starts up.
http://kyweathercenter.com/This guy Bailey is usually quite accurate. He indicates a major pattern change starting next weekend.
However, looks like it could be a weather roller coaster in the short term.
Why did North Carolina get the highest mountains? Can we make some trades? Imagine if Blue Knob was over 5,000 feet like Beech and Sugar Mtns.

If only we had been given one ancient dormant volcano about 10,000 feet tall in the mid-Atlantic! No harm, no foul presuming it sprouted and went dormant about 10 million years BC.
And assuming some crazy Austrians with dollar signs in their eyes got here to develop it before the Sierra Club stepped in.
If you look at Weiss knob on Google earth (Canaan's Mnt) its pretty big and is somewhat comparable to a mountain in Vermont. If only they would've cut the ski resort on the opposite side from the peak down... 2000 foot vertical
I'm wondering if the local areas can survive if they don't make another Christmas week?
ok Im starting to believe in global warming now. Truly am. This is crazy. With the exception of a few years ago, all I can remember is warmth in Nov/Dec and the ability to wash my car during these months more so every year.
Sniff, look at the webcams for 7springs. They are done. I called it right by going on Friday for sure. But damn, this weather just flat out stinks. Hell even the damn dandilions are growing again in my yard. SO instead of riding this weekend, I will be cutting the grass?
I remember almost always by now, having to warm up the car or scrape ice/snow off my windows. We haven't seen a single snowfall YET.
Im sure we are in the middle of some cyclical warm up, however again Im starting to buy into global warming. I hate junk science, especially in the medical field; however, all the science in the world can't tell me that it is not warmer than it used to be on average. Sure we aren't hitting records, but our average is MUCH higher than before. And each year that average changes slightly, yet we crash through it over and over again.
Source: 35 years of memories and pictures to prove it.
Wasn't it one of the colder Novembers on record in some parts?
yes and just two years ago we had tons of cold and snow. same the year before that.
So... odds T-Line opens as planned on the 15th. Top to bottom or just bottom?
From Massanutten Resort:
UPDATED 12/03/2012 -- Unseasonably warm weather has delayed the opening of Ski Season. Our snow makers will continue to take advantage of any opportunity to make snow so we can open the Ski Slopes and Tube Park as soon as possible. Please keep an eye on this page for weather and snow-making updates.
ok Im starting to believe in global warming now. Truly am. This is crazy.
...And 97% of scientists agree with you..... should be known that just warmer temperatures doesn't tell the whole story of climate change anyways, but in reference to this...
Looks like we might get lucky in next few weeks - maybe get a little snow.
ok Im starting to believe in global warming now. Truly am. This is crazy.
correct my friend - global warming is not just about some average temperature change; our weather is becoming more and more extreme - yes maybe it is only a 1 degree average change and people say "so what" but in fact is the extremes in temperature are proving to be problematic. NOAA I believe states that over the last two years our weather had become more erratic by well over 30% - what this means is it will be hard (as we have seen) for ski areas in marginal locations like the Mid Atlantic to operate smoothly. Two weeks of snow making followed by a an almost equal stretch of above normal temp essentially mitigates previous gains, at great expense that probably cannot be recovered due to the short season and lack of customers. I believe that if this sort of weather, if it becomes a predominate pattern, could indeed making operating ski areas around here a financially unsustainable proposition.
I wouldn't say the weather is becoming more extreme... maybe it's returning to a normal in a pattern shift that takes longer to notice then most of us are alive to witness? Which would really indicate that it's not a man-caused issue.
Anyway, talking extreme, how about chunks of ice floating on the Delaware as if it were the article circle in the 1700s? They seemed to consider that pretty normal back then and didn't have SUVs...
lol quite - two years ago there was ice sawing away on the hull of the boat i live on - now the water temps are still well above 40 degrees so thankfully our reverse-cycle heat pumps can still run and make heat which i don't too terrible mind.

I find 'chaotic' is a better word than 'extreme' in this context.
15 below coming to the upper Midwest..US...
The cuter half is out there right now -
and that, too, won't last very long.
It's cold somewhere on the planet and warm somewhere else. That's not going to change no matter what happens to our climate or who's science you believe in. No revelations here.
The temperatures have trended warmer in this area, I cannot ski at my mountain and this weather pattern suchs. That's all I can say. Unlike some other preachy posters, I don't have a political agenda on this, I just want to ski. Several years ago we had a thaw in January and many of the local mountains closed for a while or had conditions that were not worth skiing. We DCSKI'ers must always deal with the finiky Mid Atlantic weather. Thus, I think we appreciate when we have those short periods of real winter weather. And yes, once again, I also hate the weather.
http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/12.1 ft of snow so far this year at Whistler mid mountain.
As of 12:30 PM Mountain Time, its +6F at Vail.
Be patient.
Typically, I don't pay attention to long range forecasts, but so far this year, several weather services have been spot on with the predicted weather in November and December around these parts. If the predictions hold true, the anticipated January and February snowfall and cold in the MidA should make up for the Seattlesque weather we're enduring now.
actually this year very much reminds me of 2002 to 2003 - I remember skiing really did not start big-time at 7 Springs until around Christmas week - and then we had a pretty darn good dump the first week of January - on the day I was leaving to move to Utah!
http://kyweathercenter.com/I follow meterologist, Chris Bailey, who seems to be quite accurate. He actually forecasts for the Kentucky area but you can still get a very good idea what our weather will be from his forecasts. It appears from the models that another storm will pass by next week and we'll again be on the warm side of the storm.
I usually take the week off between Christmas and New Year and ski the whole week. I am not sure what to expect at this point. I see no long range focasts with long periods of snow making weather. That would really suck.
It sure would be great to have a snowy Christmas week.
We are a patient bunch!
Keep your heads up. Things are continuing to look better!
government weather manipulation using lasers from their defunct star wars program that they reupped in 98. This site I was reading had many many documents and seemingly much effort by some people out there to squash his comments.
He and others have said that they will likely manipulate the weather in order to bolster the global warming argument, requiring all of us to 'check in' with the government for everything from water to bullets.
All crazy person bantering aside, this weather sucks
I have off all next week and xmas week as , using it after the 1st I will only have a 6 days to burn by March. I have something like 100 hours to burn before the end of the year or I lose my time off
I was hoping that this week was going to be colder than expected and that 7s and hv would blow snow all week to open this weekend. Not. Even if they started mid week and had until mid week next week to blow, they wouldnt reopen until after xmas.
WOW can you imagine all the people that have reservations that are cancelling? I'll bet there will be some condo owners at these places desperate to fill at this time of the year for good rates. Or stubborn ones with not a penny to show for their efforts.

Have you tried upping yer alcohol consumption? I think yer co-workings are starting to get a little nervous about yer twitches and shakes.

Saving vacation time for skiing in the Mid Atlantic (or most of the US) in December is a fool's errand. Blow it all in January - April, building your balance from zero the rest of the year.

I seriously doubt many reservations are booked for days pre-Xmas weeek. And the Xmas/NYE visitors are likely to just want to get away, even if the snow conditions are marginal. Even Utah this past weekend was a bit of a ghost town.
Last weekend was miserable in the Valley as far as snowmaking weather goes - good bird hunting weather though. Heard T-Line has started blowing again and forecast looks like cold enough thru X-Mas so I think skiing will be fine.
JohnL heard you have been hanging out in Utah with some unattached heels. How was it?
The unattached heel was making some very nice turns. Even a snowboarder on the lift turned around and watched. But, he did earn the nickname "10 turns" on one run; 10 PSIA textbook turns followed by a tele-turtle. Repeat several times. (He's gonna kill me for this one.)
I had a plane ticket that was expiring, so I had to go somewhere. Utah blew away all expectations; would have been satisfied with only skiing groomers this early in the year. Even with only ~30 inches of base (Utah slopes are rocky and need a lot of snow to open), 75% + of the terrain was open with few things poking through. (Even some double black trees @ Brighton were open.) Did some very serious exploring off-trail, ski bases and edges suffered only minor dings. (I did bring my East Coast skis - Line Prophet 90's - so I didn't have to worry about what I hit and they provided enough float in the deeper snow.)
Found soft uncut snow all four days. First run of the season was a rope-drop on Ballroom @ Alta. 3-4 inches of chalky snow, followed by some nice exploring of features on the sides of the groomed trail. All the way to the bottom. Pretty sweet.
Saturday was a full-blown powder day @ Solitude. By the end of the day, about a foot of light Utah blower fell. Plenty of knee deep stashes near the top of the Summit lift and in the trees of Headwall Forest. Honeycomb Canyon opened for the season that day; I may not have a run better this year than the run we took there. High speed pow turns through a meadow; had four face shot turns in a row at the bottom when I had some serious speed accumulated.
Skied very few groomers over four days. Plus, airplane, airport, hotel, ski lifts, ski lodge were pretty empty. Got some nice skiing in, so I'm not as upset about the local weather. Worked out well. Guess this is a Trip Report.
Nice to hear you hit it in Utah. It was looking a little sketchy for awhile there. I would adopt "10 Turns" as a new nickname for our friend, but I'm probably "7 Turns" myself so I better keep quiet.
See you this weekend if you're up at T-Line.
As he's often prone to do, Henry Margusity sees some interesting potential leading up to Christmas. Includes a zone of snow intensity (as I'll call it) right over some of the lowland hills in S. PA..
http://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-bl...ristmas/2614579..it's known this will also commence the usual "Henry's an idiot" responses. But I, for one, enjoy his typical optimism - and sometimes a blind squirrel finds a nut.
but I'm probably "7 Turns" myself so I better keep quiet.
Hah! I was thinking the same number for myself. 10 turns is a much cleaner skier than I am. And I am definitely showing the rust from the debacle of last winter's accident and 2 day ski season.
You should hear the nicknames I was thinking of giving Jimmy and K-Will...
Not likely to head down until WL is open from the top. Plus sounds like the house could be a bit of a construction zone this weekend and I may just be in the way.
[quote=JohnL.........................zone this weekend and I may just be in the way. [/quote]
We do have cold beer
Jimmy - PM me your address. I might drop by and say hi. You are in Old T-Line right. I think I looked at your place once but forgot where it is. We are renting a place on Cabin Mountain Road this season
So John, is '10 turns' you? Curious minds want to know. 10 turns then a crash is not bad at all for a tele newbie and could easily be explained as just fatigue.
Nope, 10 turns is not me nor a DC Ski poster. He's a T-Line instructor (who 99% of the time does way more than 10 turns.)
No tele in my immediate future; need to rack up the alpine miles after last year's drought.

ha very funny. Yes I should up my alcohol intake. Like I said though, I MUST use my time off before the end of the year or I lose it completely. Down to ZERO with no days off.
I'd rather sit at home rocking back and forth on the floor sitting in indian position in front of the window mumbling "snow..snow...............snow?........snow...snow"
Like I said though, I MUST use my time off before the end of the year or I lose it completely. Down to ZERO with no days off.
You have to get down to ZERO leave balance? Not to maximum carryover balance? Srsly? If so, time for a new job cause that policy is wacked.
As a 40+ year CSRS...he must mean Use-or-Lose (anything OVER 240). Unless it's some Private Industry (Contractor) thing! Yes...I always plan my Use-or-Lose down to 0...but still have that 240 "in the bank". Thought I'd use some at Snowshoe, but the "starting off with a Bang" turned into a rainy Whimper! LOL Will try to get there more then twice this Season....Season Pass didn't even pay for itself last year...and I OWN a place there! Learned not to say "prices couldn't possibly go any lower!" LOL LOL
sounds like some folks are gonna be in the valley this weekend... I got pm'ed last nighht that only wood's hole was gonna be open. I've heard that before and they finally do get it open from mid station. I guess the Mrs and I will head up if for no other reason than curosity. I gotta attend a HOA board meeting and then I'll go to Jimmy's and get beer... ummmm...beer! Which number is it Jimmy?

Yup. Company transition where we are supposed to consume it all or lose it. They bought out alot of our time off though so, it was nice becuase I just dont take that much time off. Too busy and , the world collapses. Too much to come back to. I'm management so, the options are limited and need to be timed just right.
I agree about the job. I've been at the same place for 5 years and things are quite stagnant for everyone. I'm about the only person that has even seen a raise, many people have had cuts.
Options are opening up this Spring. I'll likely jump ship then.
