Elk Mountain is now open, with one back and three greens.

Snowshoe has been open for a while.

Hidden Valley is still open.

Seven Springs to re-open when?

Wisp is open (barely.)

Timberline is scheduled to open on Friday (Dec 21.) When White Lightning and Sally open from the top is TBD. By December 26th is pretty much assured, if not sooner.

Canaan Valley is scheduled to open December 26.

Any others?

Camelback says they plan to open Friday Dec. 21 with 7 trails and 2 lifts, adding more terrain as snowmaking continues.

Word on the street is tline is gonna open friday only with woods hole (aka bunny lift) and not even to mid station

However, if we get the snow predicted, White Grass will be open to the top and beyond without a shadow of a doubt.

I heard the same. Just checked T-Line's web cam at ~10:15 today (Thursday.) They are grooming right in front of the deck; pretty decent amount of snow there. Unfortunately, WL base (middle/lower section) looks real thin from the camera angle.

I just made a tour of ski areaas using a web cam site, and it look bleak. Watched them pushing out the base area at t-line getting ready for tomorrow. One thing for sure... with predicted temps, any snow will become real fast and be waiting for some fresh to mix in on top.
The folks I feel sorry for are the Virginia areas which may miss another holiday season for customers. That'll be two winters in a row. Wintergreen went under last year and got bailed by a new investor. Bryce spent a lot of money on their new quad. The Nut has a long way to go before they get anything open.
Chip is right. White Grass will have the only top to bottom skiing at 100% in the mid-atlantic.

Snowshoe is already starting to see snow from this storm. They will see snow continously it seems until Sat morn.

I may convince the wife to let me go down there instead of locally. IF and IF they open cupp runn with 'beware of changing conditions' warnings

checkout snowshoes cam. Already snowing , about 1" so far it seems

I say no chance of Cupp opening this weekend. I was there last Sat and it was brown as a grocery bag. They are expanding up the south end, towards Soaring Eagle Express.

Cupp and Shays will be last on the list.

IF the weather stays cold, I see a shot of Cupp after Christmas.

David,
I agree with you re Cupp openning, unless the Shoe really gets 24" of snow and it stays real cold!
Then maybe the week after Christmas day.
I'll be up at the Shoe with my grandkids starting Dec 27 and I am hoping for the best, especially cold weather for snowmaking. Hopefully they can get a couple of South Mt. trails open allowing the new high speed quad to absorb some of the holiday load!
Any other DCSkiers planning to ski at the Shoe next week?

The Wintergreen blog says the temp was 29 at 6am and they are blowing snow. Working to open by Dec. 26.

Massanutten is blowing snow on DJ as of 8am. Love the new webcam. They know opening by Dec. 24 is a target but unlikely. Have limited hours Dec. 24 and 25 even when already open so that employees can enjoy their Christmas. Our friends who are arriving tonight might actually get on the slopes for a few days after Christmas.

$55 for skiing today with a grand total of 7 trails/slopes open with ice pellets (from snowmaking) slamming into your face whipped up by 40 MPH wind gusts. Should be an enjoyable time for those so inclined.

HV reports 5 inches of natural snowfall in the last 24 hrs while 7S reports 12 inches of natural snow in the last 24 hrs. Amazing what a 3 to 4 mile difference makes in snowfall accumulation.

A difference like that can be pretty common due to area geography, orientation, local features. More common, it is likely due to measuring differences. (Which to be fair, this AM snow depth/snowfall measurements are pretty much a crap shoot due to the severe winds and drifing.)

As Chip reports this AM: SuPer DriFt (classic!)

Much more important to me grin, Dave and Chip are reporting ~7-8" on the ground this AM in Canaan Valley.

Update 12/21/12

We are open for the 2012-2013 season. Check the trail report for more detailed information on what is and isn't open yet.

We are making snow at every opportunity the weather allows. We had a lot of rain yesterday but are expecting about a foot of snow with this current storm. We hope to be open to mid-station perhaps tomorrow or at least by Sunday. We are expecting to be open to the top of the mountain by the 25th or 26th. Lets hope the weather forecast holds. We'd love to some some cold Arctic air for a couple of weeks.

7S only received 6". For some reason they are adding the manmade total to the natural snow fall amounts. It's all about marketing......

Ok, it looks like the best-case scenario for T-line on Sunday 12/23 is open to mid station only. Too bad.

'Seems harder this year to get info about future prospects at Wisp. Yes, they're making snow in several locations, but when do they expect to open North Camp, Squirrel Cage and Mainstreet?

So ... besides Snowshoe ( too long a haul ), what ski areas will have the best open terrain for a day trip on Sunday 11/23?

Thanks,
Woody

Just received a taunting voice message from djop. Greek Peak in New York (not too far from PA) has 2-3 inches on the ground, and puking snow at 1" per hour. Good for them.

But, he is first on my list for taunting voice/text messages when I'm skiing in Utah this winter on a pow day. grin

Was just looking into Wisp. Looks like they're making snow on Squirrel Cage & Face. They usually get those trails open real fast, not sure what kind of progress they've made on them so far. Was thinking Monday may not be a bad time to get some morning turns in if they're open. Then I looked at their lift ticket prices.....

Dec 24th starts Holiday prices, aka $68 for <5 trails (currently 2). What a rip job....

Just spoke on the phone with Wisp (1:15 pm 12/22). According to their spokesperson, mountains ops says that there's a small chance that they might add Squirrel Cage Sunday but prospects for Monday look better. The windy conditions are making snowmaking difficult to control.

Oh well.

I did appreciate the frank and informative response.

It is so frustrating to try to get clear information from Timberline. Website, Facebook, recorded info ... What's up?

If anyone gets official word about open runs for Sunday 12/23, please post. I'm anxious to hit the runs but don't want to make the long drive for a mountain that's open to midstation.

Ditto for Snowshoe re. Sunday 12/23. Thanks.

Timberline really needs to make a better effort to update its web site. It should also eliminate Adobe Flash, which is incompatable with most mobile devices and is going away in the near future according to Adobe.

The trail update today said Woods Hole only. I am hoping to head up next weekend. Hopefully by then, some top to bottom terrain will open.

http://www.timberlineresort.com/Winter/snowreport.php

Can anyone up there provide a report on snowmaking progress??? I know the winds made things difficult yesterday for the snowmakers, which I am sure are doing their best to turn lemons into lemonade.

We might get back to getting you guys the daily snow report BEFORE 7am. We're waiting to hear back from Timberline's management by Dec 26.

In the meantime, as of Sun morning:
Woods Hole is open (bunny slope)
Whiteout is scheduled to have open 8 minutes ago (green slope from mid station)
White Lightning has PLENTY of snow (black diamond from the top) - they'll need to push it out, groom it and open - I anticipate that by Tuesday - my best guess.
Salamander is more than 2/3 completed (2-mile long green trail).

View recent photos on http://www.VisitCanaan.com from yesterday - including photos from the top of the mountain.

That page doesn't appear to me to use Flash. Standard table format with all the useful information. Displays nicely on my Android smart phone.

Are you having trouble viewing the new page? (It has been changed since last week.)

Per the page, snow making on Sally, WL/Crossroads, White Out. Which is their standard early priority.

Keep looking at it if you want... the above link doesn't use Flash (you are so right).
Inaccurate information can be viewed there - even when you are at work (having to hide from your boss with your iPhone).

As usual, we would have two versions:
Interactive using Flash... for those who don't need to hide.
Static for iPhones and similar portable devices.
The Plus? Well, it's usually updated by 5:45 in the morning - but almost always before 7am (instead of by 9, 10, or even 11am).

Again, you got plenty of choices - which is so cool!

Was having trouble last week but I found the non flash version and all is well. The sight looks pretty good too on my Ipad 4. The only problem I have at this point is with the "mountain" pull down menu. It does not want to pull down with either the Ipad or Droid. Is anyone else having this problem?

Also, www.visitcanaan.com cannot be viewed with my Ipad. Is this a flash issue as well?

We should probably move further discussions wrt issues with T-Lines snow report to a separate thread.

But to summarize John's questions and let's move any more to a different thread:
Quote:

The non-flash version is what is currently linked to on T-Line's web site.

Quote:

UI gestures coded for mouse-enabled devices don't always translate well to touch-enabled devices. Different constraints and different event models. Don't tap, touch and hold. You'll get a system pop-up menu. Touch outside the menu, and the scrolled down Mountain Menu is visible. Tap on an individual item.

Quote:

I can't view it right now using my iPad (iOS 5.1.1) or Android smart phone (4.1.1)

As of 3 PM today when I went back to my condo... the conditions at t-line were loose granular and packed powder. Wood's hole and white-out from mid station. Waiting on colder temps to finsih snowmaking on WL and sally. Neither will be open before Wednesday, and probably be thursday or friday to be sure. Then expect the usual. Snowmaking on winterset, upper/lower heaven and OTW. By January 5/6 might have them open. The need is cold weather. A two week shot of sub 20 temps would give them nearly 100%.

Thanks for the update! The colder temps late in the week should switch on the lake effect machine, which will give whatever Timberline does manage to open a fresh coat. Always an added benefit. Lake effect will also make Whitegrass an alternative for those who want to mix things up.

Both Mnut and Wintergreen got a few inches of snow out of the last storm system.

Mnut finally starting to charge regular rates on Dec. 31. They managed to get Showtime (blue) open to mid-station today. Looks pretty on the webcam. Geronimo and DJ should open next.

Wgreen started charging regular rates on Dec. 28. Got Acorn open for Eagles Swoop. Talking about Highlands opening soon.

Check out timberline snow report - with photos every couple of days.
Or... just go to www.VisitCanaan.com and see NEW PHOTOS every day of the week. Proof that there's plenty of snow.

As for the opening of more trails?
Winterset is next. They could open it Sat morning (Jan 5).
Upper Dew Drop is coming right after. They could open it Sun morning (Jan 6).
Next will come twister, but that will take a few more days.
** I say COULD OPEN if everything was perfect: a bit of overtime, a little bit less time with their families for the snowmakers, a little more time freezing their butts, etc... that isn't a promise - but I know they will try.

Live snow report is here - Interactive & all - if you are using a PC or a Mac.
http://www.visitcanaan.com/timberline

Either way, low crowd expected for the weekend of Jan 5 & 6 - in fact, very low based on the 4 rental agencies.

Massanutten is not quite as open as usual, but close. DJ is open so they had NASTAR this weekend. Will take another cold spell before ParaDice can get open. Same for Pacesetter, the easier blue off Lift 5. Showtime is open to the top. My daughter said conditions were tough this morning. Active snowmaking meant and a frozen base meant slick spots as well as places with piles that would almost stop skis. DJ was still icy around lunch time.

I'm with a friend with two kids, ages 4 and 6, who are skiing for the first time. Conditions were perfect for beginners. Good snow in the teaching area and Southern Comfort, warm but not too warm, and not that many people. Never a wait of more than 2-3 chairs even at the bottom.

The terrain parks are "open" but pretty basic.

Seven Springs is mostly open with the exception of The Spot and The Alley terrain parks. They should be open soon. Natural snow areas are open but getting thin. Machine made is icy in places (what else is new). Crowds are as usual but the Tyrol lift had the lest lines and I skied right on in the singles line (on the Avalanche side) a few time this afternoon. Demo daze today. I like the Line Prophet 98, quick with edge grip for a near 100mm board. I tried it in a 172 but would like to try it in a 180.
