Ran across this Dec 2012 article for folks in Northern VA. Good for beginners and intermediates wondering where to go. Interesting that Wisp and Snowshoe are not mentioned. Includes CV/Timberline, Bryce, Massanutten, Wintergreen, The Homestead, Liberty, Roundtop, Whitetail. Plus some basics at the end of the article about etiquette and terminology. Has quotes from DCSki regulars.

Goofed up on one fact for Mnut. Said it was around for 30 years but last season they made a big deal about celebrating the 40th season.

sorry for thread drift but..just noticed your grand targhee plans for this season...awesome place...spent some winters out there...if you are into backcountry skiing at all try to hook up with someone and go to the teton-pass---some great relatively safe backcountry skiin', with proper skills and common backcountry safety knowledge of course...either way targhee in bounds is great as well, tons of snow, great friendly low key vibe, and none of the jackson hole crowd madness or fur boots(ok, maybe limited fur boots)...definetily hike Mary's Nipple at the resort for fresh tracks anytime...if you get brave continue along the ridge and drop into on of several relatively steeper shots like the Bobcat as seen below...

Thanks for the thought but I'm not the backcountry type and neither are the ski buddies I'm going with in late March. We'll only be at Targhee for a day, which will be my first day out west. Just stopping in on way to the EpicSki Gathering at Big Sky/Bridger/Moonlight Basin because we are driving from SLC. We are a group of mixed abilities from intermediate to advanced former instructors, all older boomers.

Looking forward to getting a taste of Targhee. I plan to go again and spend more time. Been reading about it for a while.

..no worries...you will have a great time at targhee...I would still recommend hiking up to mary's if you get a chance...it is in bounds and has great views and even better skiing for a short hike...there is also some day cat skiing available at targhee...

...I really got into the backcountry while wintering out there...took me a while to get my girlfriend into it, but eventually got her out for a couple backcountry/sidecountry trips....here's a pic from her first boot pack accent in the tetons...we got about 2000 ft of vert out of this one...the snow was quality on the way down and everybit worth the climb...

..here is another pic out in the teton backcountry with local buddy and dogs...

...I'll get back out there for another winter for sure...

Back to the article. wink

While I might nitpick about minor errors and omissions, I was impressed by the information, photos and links presented. Can't cover every B&B and every opportunity available in a single article, but it's clear (esp. through quotations from DCSki sages Jim and Scott) that these writers did their homework. The "Slope Etiquette" section at the end ought to be attached to the Skiers' Code.

Good stuff!
