...sorry, I don't have any more pull over there than you or anyone else, actually probably less...definetily no lights on over there all night...never seen them make snow without lights on...I got a pretty good view from my porch and now that its daybreak I don't see any action, but I can't see the base area...who know's I could be wrong...doesn't really matter for weekend either way---whenever the start blowin' it will most likely be making deeper base on existing 3 trails or makin' twister and twister wouldn't be ready for the weekend crowds at this point...but I am just guessin'...

It was 20 degrees last night - for several hours.
That's just not cold enough to make snow.
It has to be around 35 before the guns will get turned on.

I'll have a lot of feedback later today - and will share news. For all I know, snowmakers may be on strike (they want snow).

Huh? 20<35 = cold. Sarcasm?! I feel like Shelden on big bang.

TL stopped blowin' (snow) by noon today at the base. How about up top or on other trails?

They had to stop blowing snow at Timberline ONLY because the water from the river was too WARM (43 degrees was reported for the water temp).
Air temperature was around 28 for the longest time, but that didn't even help.

Canaan had the same problem, but ended up blowing a little longer (a little wetter too).

Snowshoe reported as terrible skiing, lack of snow nearly all over the place. Their powerful snowmaking equipment will be put on the test during the next 3 days.

This morning, Canaan Valley feels a whole lot different: frigid temps are back to stay. The weekend looks even better than originally planned.

..from looks of yesterday t-line is set up to makin/gonna make more base on what's already open currently,+ lower heaven, and + twister from what I could see...of course with the sticks they are always set up to make on OTW and Drop if gets cold enough...I saw some Canaan pics on your VisitCanaan site Vic so looks like you were over there yesterday---are they makin' snow on any new trails over there? what's currently open over there? where they makin' snow on the tubin' park or did they move those new yellow guns over to the slopes--or are those yellow guns just sittin' by the tubin' park not being used?...

Two trails from the top of Canaan are open. I'd gladly give you the names if they would hire me to take care of their Interactive Snow Report (hint, hint).

In all honesty, I am really looking for a great season - snowmaking continues on both resorts, with snowmaking that will feel more "natural" today.

They had two yellow guns on the slopes. The rest of the new guns are being used elsewhere.

Canaan is in fact looking to open new trails; they were blowing on couple of side trails.

As far as I could tell, everyone is working really hard - didn't see anyone slacking at all at Timberline or Canaan. It's just a matter of time and cold temperatures... we have the COLD.

FYI: I skied both places yesterday; Canaan left the guns for me to see that they were making snow... and so: I got soaked (but it's unfair: I was just late getting there) smile

It was 28 degrees at Mnut as of 11am Friday, Jan. 18. Snow guns still blazing all over the open slopes as of noon!

Mnut is going to close Geronimo at 4:30, presumably for intense snowmaking in order to get it ready for the weekend. That's the best beginner run for snowboarders, as well as advanced beginners ready for a bit more pitch than Southern Comfort. Also has the little terrain park down one side when there is enough snow, which hasn't' happened yet this winter.

Learned recently that Mnut is automating more guns. Have 20 out of 250 automated at this point.

Will be up there tonight.

You know it's a crappy season so far when Snowshoe posts ~10 pics on Facebook in mid-January bragging that they're 'Making Snow!'

This weather blows....

today:

cool and dry.

Whitegrass no snow, but nice hike to the knob.

Canaan snow looks questionable and shiny. parking lot completely full.

Timberline lifts not running today, electrical problems, sort of a playground on the snow at the base and lots of people want refunds. Might be running now, need to drive over and see.

Blackwater falls trails closed due to Sandy damage.

oh well.

Timberline had some electric problems; took longer to fix than planned. The resort has restored power though, I must admit:

About 29 cross country / tele skiers took their gear out today - myself included (as usual). The result was a total blast - and so quiet! Camaraderie was great - if you didn't show up, you kinda missed it.

It was different, at best. Timberline had gone COMPLETELY GREEN for about 6 hours, proving that many people can have a lot of fun without electricity. This was also proven by the many MANY kids playing with their parents on the snow.

Not everyone was so happy - and understandably so... however, skiing is about being on the snow and having fun. I hope that there aren't too many regrets.

Snow conditions were variable at Massanutten today. Much, much better than could be expected given how much melted during the heat wave. Found out the 20 automated snow guns are on Southern Comfort. It was about 31 degrees at the base at 8:30am. DJ was icy up top in first thing in the morning. Per usual, the place was relatively empty because Sat is check-in day for many units. DJ softened up by 10:30, then got sticky at the bottom after lunch with it was in the mid-50's. Got relatively crowded because Lift 5 shut down due to mechanical problems. Still ski on though.

Lift 5 still wasn't running when we left around 2:30. The lift lines at the bottom was were probably 10-15 min then. Ski school gets out at 2:00, so 2:15-3:30 tends to be the busiest time.

Southern Comfort (long green) Lift 4 at 11am, most of these people are not on line yet

Geronimo (green) Lift 3 at 11am, got longer when Lift 5 stopped running

Top of Diamond Jim (black) at 12:15pm, never had a line per usual

Instructor with Slopeslider group on Southern Comfort, great day for kids since it was in the 50's

Tline delivered on Sunday. Arrived at 8:30, got first row rock star parking, lines not too bad, snow very good on dew drop and pretty good on lightning. Wind not a real problem and bonus - snowmakers turned off. Sirianis pizza and back for more first row rock star parking and night skiing, brews in the pub for the first half, go Ravens. Super rental from Mountaintop. Combined with the hiking on Saturday a great weekend. Thanks valley!

Liberty today - they were blowing just about everywhere all day long. Conditions were pretty decent though. We left by 4 PM, as we were simply bored of doing the back side that many times and the moguls were getting rough. But all in all, a good day. Not too crowded either. The "back side" really wasn't bad, especially if using the left to the further left. Longest I waited on the back side lifts was probably 3 minutes, max. Front side? After noon the wait was about 4 to 6 minutes if you were smart about it (use lines to way right where there's less people).

Mnut website says they are starting to blow snow on ParaDice, Main Street, and Yee Ha (connector over to Lift 6 from top of Lift 5). Heading back on Friday for a long weekend with friends who are beginners. Hope they have enough clothes for the cold!
