My family along with four other families recently visited Canaan Valley (Jan. 28-Jan 31). We stayed at the lodge and took advantage of their mid-week package. Three days of skiing and lodging (including bfasts, skating session and tubing session for adults) for approximately $360). The kids lift tickets were $10 per child per day with a Safeway club card. The all-day ski and play for kids was terrific. Both kids (6 and 8) made huge leaps in their skiing. Conditions were great considering one night we received at least an inch of rain. The next day you could hear and see the water rushing down the mountain but the base was substantial enough that the skiing conditions were still very good. The next night there were snow showers which lasted through morning. This is not a great mountain for expert skiers, but it is great for families and beginning/intermediate skiers. An intermediate skier can ski the whole mountain (our 8 year old did with the exception of a couple of black diamonds). The price is unbeatable! The kids loved the mountain and the deer that hung out by our hotel door (motel sytle rooms, but clean and comfortable). The only negative - the dinner in the lodge. It was expensive for mediocre food at best. We went to Sirianni's pizza in Davis for dinner one night (there were 19 of us) and had a great meal with great service. One more note - on the last day we skiied, the temperature stayed at around 27 degrees on the mountain (at 3pm). When we arrived home that evening (3 hrs. 15 min.), we found that the temp. in Washington that day was 57 degrees! Overall, the combination of value and snow conditions were hard to beat.
