My son and I will be in Grafton WV on Feb 9 for a high school wrestling tournament and are considering heading over to CV or TLine to ski on sat night & Sunday. I've never been to either.

We are both intermediate ski / boarders. We prefer less crowds and we don't need to be challenged my tons of expert terrain, bumps or glades.

How do the lift speeds compare?
Any advice on lodging for one night (Sat)?
How do crowds compare?

Not worried about night life, fine dining or anything fancy, just a clean room, reasonable price and a fun day on the slopes.

Thanks in advance for any and all insight and advice.

There is no night life in Canaan Valley.

My opinion is that the terrain is better at Timberline, but that their lifts tend to break down.... a lot!

No advice on lodging, I usually stay with family close by.

How do the lift speeds compare? Canaan Valley - slow, T-Line - slower. Whitegrass, depending upon conditioning level, in between the two.
Any advice on lodging for one night (Sat)? One night may be tough, if not impossible. Try the Canaan Valley Lodge on the skier area web site. Worse case, you can always do a chain motel and drive up from Elkins.
How do crowds compare? Typically CVR is less crowded than T-Line. But this has been a funky weather year, so it may depend upon who has adequate open terrain. Jam too many into not enough terrain, and you have issues.

Canaan Valley's lift is faster (tested by www.visitcanaan.com with a GPS).

More moderate terrain would be Canaan Valley as well.
Easier for the kids... Canaan Valley wins.
Clean and very well priced lodging: you guessed it: Canaan Valley.
Night: well, you have ice skating and tubing for kids - and older kids in Canaan Valley as well.

Why go to Timberline then?
If you are spending two days, you will really love the difference between the two resorts. Your kids will love the 2-mile run down Salamander, and if an easy Blue is called upon, Twister ski trail will be so "remembered" with exceptional views.

Call 304-259-5315 (direct line to the area's visitors center. Ask for details regarding Ski The Valley - and see if this ski pass will match your needs.

Bonus...
Between the 2 resorts lies White Grass Touring Center.
Looking for really good and healthy food... look no further.

Agree on the lodge at CV but there's the Village Inn beside Big Johns which is also clean, convenient and reasonable. Call ahead for reservations whereever you want to stay. T-line will have more terrain open and is seldom crowded on Sundays. CV would be a good bet for Saturday afternoon/evening. Plus they have the longest tubiing park in the mid atlantic just opened.

http://timbersweb.com for the hotel.
The rooms are actually pretty nice, and offer comfortable mattresses.
Stay on the first floor unless you need exercise with your ski boots. It's nice to know that you can just park your car and forget about it during your hotel stay.

You'll need to go through the rental shop and then through the business office to get your keys.

A drive up to Davis is faster than the service at Timbers.

Recommendations for food:
Breakfast next door to Big John's (canaan valley)
Lunch at Timberline (fast & easy)
Dinner at Amelia's (heart of Canaan Valley)

If you are in your 30's, then go to Sirrianni's in Canaan valley instead of Amelia's.
Better ambiance.

Thanks to all for the tips.

Our game plan is to head to T Line after wrestling on Sat for the night session, stay at the Canaan Village Inn Sat night, then hit CV on Sunday.

Let's hope old man winter returns as planned. It's raining like a female dog in western PA right now and it's 60*. Supposed to snow tonight

I was at CV this past weekend at saturday and sunday were great. But Monday and tuesday were horrible. All the snow was washed off by tuesday. Only the icy base was left. I would wait until a fresh base builds up again. At least 12" of fresh and man-made.

Thanks Miami, I'm hoping the weather cooperates all week to build up what was lost. I can cancel my room no later than Wed so I'll be watching Vic's ski reports closely.

Based on the current webcam view, the rebuilding has begun in earnest.
