Whiteface or Snowshoe?
February 24, 2013
So I had this spring trip to Whiteface all planned (for March 23-27, my son's Spring Break).
Then Snowshoe goes and drops that insane deal on season passes.
Now I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better just to go to Snowshoe instead. I kinda wanted to go to Lake Placid again (haven't been there in decades, and I've never skied Whiteface), but it would be a whole lot cheaper at this point (not to mention half the drive) to go to Snowshoe.
Any thoughts? Anyone have any idea what the conditions at SS might be that late in March?
Thanks.
Buy the pass online and, go to Whiteface. Mountain-wise....like comparing Equinox to a Cayenne.
"trip to Whiteface all planned"
"wanted to go to Lake Placid again (haven't been there in decades, and I've never skied Whiteface),"
You are going North.
If you expect to ski more than 3 days at snowshoe next year, buy the pass also.
I'm with pagamony. Go and experience Whiteface. The largest drop in the East at 3,100'. Awesome resort, quintessential Northeast. The Adirondacks at your door. In the middle of the largest park in the Lower 48. The Olympic compound. Lake Placid. Saratoga. Enough wilderness to drive you wild and cuncurrently, the accouterments of Manhattan's Upper East Side. From quaint B&Bs to legendary hotels. I remember it from my college days and it was imposing.
On the other hand, closer to reality, the deal at Snowshoe is unbeatable. And it's literally on your backyard....
This year I went to Mont Tremblant with the family. And at the same time, got 5 passes at Snowshoe.
My friend Whiteface.... So Easy to Lap... So Steep... So much speed flying down Skyward... Why must it be so far from me
Why has Whiteface with arguably the best Mtn stats on the East coast been probably one of the least talked about big Mtn ski area here on Dcski?...still a hangover from the iciest mountain rep??
When I was in College, we used to call it "IceFace"... Whiteface lies on the northern edge of the snow belt, and as a result gets less snow than some resorts to the south of it, such as across the lake in VT. And yes, if can be ICYYYYYY..... Still, with newer improvements, grooming, snow making, et al, it is unbeatable. The other thing about Whiteface is that it is out of the way. Getting out of the Adirondack Northway to Whiteface can be a hassle. Also, it's not a self-contained mountain. Much of the infrastructure is in Lake Placid, 8 miles and with traffic, a half an hour away. Still, for ski culture and amenities, it is a world-class resort.
Okay, okay. Thanks all for the advice. We'll keep our plans for Lake Placid. But as I've already gotten the SS season pass, we'll try to make sure we hit there a few times next season.
I had Adirondack Pow Days when i was there this time last year it was awesome! Im leaving for Utah on Monday tho I cant wait to compare the biggest of the East with Snowbasin!
