Better for Saturday - Blue Knob or Massanutten?
March 12, 2013
For a range of reasons, these are the only two choices we're considering for tomorrow. Gut says BK, but Massanutten is about 40 minutes closer. Worth the extra drive?
What trails do you like to ski at BK? Who is "we"?
Aaron from BK Website

I am not sure I have seen BK 100% open since the winters a few years back.
Go to BK and take your rock skis and enjoy!
Does your better half have rock skis?
Thanks, Keith - that's probably the nudge I was looking for.
Marz - "we" is Mrs. Scootertig and I. We were up at BK for the first time together 3 weeks ago (I'd been before), and skied pretty much everything that was open except for Extravert, as it was really icy and didn't look like much fun. The glades weren't really open, but we may have found a few entry points that worked. I'm hoping more will be open/skiable tomorrow.
My only complaint that day was that they only had one of the 2 bottom-to-top chairs running, and it was the one without the midstation, so we had to keep making the trek over to Stembogan bowl all the way from the top.
We both have rock skis, so that may be the plan unless the 'Nut is likely to be better...
Scootertig, I just got back from a great day at Blue Knob. Yes, 100% open. My son and friends skied several glades, including Ditch Glades, which they said was pretty good -- minor thin spots but not icy. Extrovert is icy but has powdery remnants on the sides. Not many people on it today ... Fewer than a dozen, and none seemed to belong there. Groomers are sweet.
Have fun,
Woody
Check w BK. last I heard the broken mid station chair was down for rest of season!

scootertig: Given what you like to ski at BK, that makes more sense to me. While Mnut will be very good, and absolutely amazing for March, the terrain is not nearly as exciting as BK. They groomed everything but MAKattack. Hoping they left the side of Paradice ungroomed for the ski team and others to play on. I'm going there because it's a weekend trip for parent-child skiing. This time, could be as many as four other families with kids ages 9-13. In my case, that makes it well worth driving 45 longer past Wintergreen. The indoor waterpark is a plus for tweens.
I went to BK for the first time for the DCSki/EpicSki Gathering in late Feb. Fun! Certainly could be nicer with both doubles running. But having a shared house right on Rt66 meant it was easy to head out for a few more runs after dinner. :-)

True, Colonel. But the other 3 chairs were running fine on Friday March 8. All trails open and lift served.

there are 4 chairs at BK?
Oh wait.. I forgot the beginner chair, aka the MM retention pond scenic ride.
We ended up at BK after all on Saturday, and got our money's worth on the 5-hour ticket. I have to say, it may have been the most enjoyable day of skiing I've had in the mid-Atlantic. Not the best conditions, necessarily, but the conditions we had paired with the terrain we skied made for a really great day. I definitely need to rework at least one edge thanks to finding some hidden treasure in the East Wall Glades, but overall things were really good.
The $25 lift tickets didn't hurt any, either. Depending on what happens this week, we may go up again for next Saturday, trying to stretch this local season as far as we can.

A lift worker I asked implied (or so I thought) that it may never run again.
That would be a game changer on those typical blustery days where you never want to go to the top until beer time.
The comment that was made by Blue Knob on their facebook page was that the problem was terminal for at least the season, and that a major decision had to be made regarding the lift. I think they are as aware as anyone of the advantages of that lift with the midstation.
Will they get something new?
Something used?
Relocate High Hopes?
who knows.
Just wondering if the current mid-station would pass State safety regs. The mid-station maybe grandfathered and removing that lift might mean no more mid-station.
