Mt. Washington, NH, summit snowfields accessed by the auto road. I'll be there sometime this weekend for this event,
http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=87964
Probably Monday.

I'll be stopping first in the Boston area to see a sister and brother in law, then in Burlington to see daughter and family. It is going to be a crazy schedule. Daughter moved to CA for a new job last Jan. son in law and grandkids will follow as soon as school ends. They'll probably be putting the house on the market this weekend. They are a ski-mad family, so they will get to the mountain if they possibly can. Next season their family season pass will be at Squaw rather than Mad River. Poor kids! wink

What a pedigree! They will be skiing blue bloods by the time they are 21.

Dennis, enjoy the trip.

You might want to get them to buy an Epic Pass from Vail Resorts instead. They'll get access to Kirkwood, Northstar, and Heavenly for about half of what a Squaw pass goes for - plus they get access to all of the Colorado resorts (including A Basin), too.

I'm not particularly enamoured with Heavenly, but I do love Kirkwood.

Agree about Heavenly, great though it would be within 4 hrs of DC. Have not been to Kirkwood but heard great things. My daughter has tried them all since going there in Jan. her employer has given her a 4 day weekend every 3 weeks during the transition to visit her family back in VT; she always skis on one day of her CA weekends. I believe that they are leaning toward this pass,
http://www.squaw.com/the-mountain/lift-tickets-passes/season-passes

She taught at Mad River and thus got a complimentary family season pass and plans to do the same in CA, but not this first year.

Whatever they choose will be fine with me. It does mean that in the future my western road trips will be to Tahoe, rather than MT or interior BC, with their great terrain and few skiers to track it up. Still I think I can 'settle' for Tahoe.

Denis, you could probably do a very reasonable version of that Tahoe Super Pass as a senior on the Silver or Bronze plan. Coincidentally, I skied all three mtns on that pass last winter and they are excellent places. Knowing your tastes somewhat, I bet you'd really enjoy poking around Alpine Meadows. Tons of lift served side-country that sees little traffic for those willing to do some exploratory traversing including everything in this picture, foreground, background, and a lot more to the right out of view.

Beware of stowaways in your car trunk. grin

I remember saying something like that in 1995 when the company I was working for put me on expat assignment in Freising, Germany for the winter. "Still, I think I can settle for the Alps and the Dolomites instead of the Rockies."

It would be a great irony, but this trip may be snowed out.

Mon. Looks possible but new snow and high wind on Sat and Sun could well close the auto road. Ive been told that the 5 mile drift can get very big very quickly under those conditions. (Tues looks like it could be quite decent and I am retired so my hall pass is open. smile ). I am visiting my daughter's family in VT while I wait for mother nature's decision.

Well, we're in New London NH, near Lake Sunapee and the ski mountain that bears the same name, where we came up looking for real estate. 2318 hours and it is SNOWING like the dickens. 4 inches expected.

Weather should be fine for skiing today, IF I can get there.

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=44.2710258&lon=-71.3055278&site=all&smap=1&searchresult=Mount%20Washington%2C%20White%20Mountain%20National%20Forest%2C%20Sargents%2C%20NH%2003846%2C%20USA

Check the past 24 h below. Peak wind 87, ave. 47. This would deposit many tons of drifted snow on the road.
When I arrived in town yesterday afternoon I checked the road status. It was open halfway, I.e. to the tree line, and
They said there was much snow and ice beyond. It's another 4 mi. To the summit. There was a big incentive to be
Open for the holiday but little to open on a tues following.

I probably should have gone to Whiteface. They got 34". However I did get to see my daughter and family in VT.

Finally, the mountain said YES. 1 PM. Road open to summit, winds down to less than 20 mph. Trip report in its own thread.

I'm done for the season. Had to be in Summit County for a Saturday meeting, so I decided to help A-Basin Shut down.

It was 32 degrees at 6 am at the top of the Basin. There were 4 ways down from the top of Lenawee, 2 ways down the upper middle of the mountain, 1 way down the lower middle of the hill, and 2 ways down the lower mountain.

At 8:40 this morning there was a very pleasant cool breeze with intense sun and not a cloud in the sky. The upper 1/3 of the mountain stayed somewhat crunchy until at least 9:40. The middle of the mountain was nice corn early on, but started to get pretty sloppy by 10. Surprisingly the lower mountain was in better shape than mid mountain was - probably due to less traffic.

I called it quits at 10. The combination of limited terrain, sloppy conditions and a growing number of people made me a bit uncomfortable with the skier traffic.

But at least I did get in a few runs in June to finally end my 2012/2013 season.
