Presently living in a desert so naturally I should start thinking about skiing. Going to be home this season for the first in a while. Thinking of going to Salt Lake for Thanksgiving week. Anyone been?

Never been on a ski trip at that time and as you know it can be dicey depending on Mother Nature. Here are some recommendations by Tony Crocker an expert on this topic:
early snow
And here is a short discussion from Epicski when someone posed the same question there one year ago:

Thanksgiving weekend is way too early to count on reliable snow anywhere. I wouldn't book more than a few weeks in advance. Plus Thanksgiving is an expensive time to travel.

Ahh...but I am currently stationed in Ventura CA. So SLC is only a 10 hour drive. I have Mammoth and Tahoe as a fall back options.

Sounds like a plan. Just wait until the last minute and based on current snow conditions pick the one that looks best and take a road trip on Ventura Highway:

Chewin' on a piece of grass walkin' down the road
Tell me how long you gonna stay here, Joe?
Some people say, "This town don't look good in snow"
You don't care, I know
Ventura highway in the sunshine
Where the days are longer
The nights are stronger than moonshine
You're gonna go I know

i'd say that is too early unless you like rock skiing. the only winter i remember where it was good at that time was 2005 when Brighton opened just before Halloween

Second all that say it is questionable for enough snow to make a trip worthwhile, and this includes your backup Tahoe resorts. I have skied Utah at least three times around Thanksgiving with marginal and highly varied results. Park City should be in anticipatory mode, but usually only several manmade snow slopes are skiable. Snowbird, Alta and Brighton better bets but no sure thing.

Looks like for another 4 hours of driving from SLC, some years Grand Targhee is well worth the trip for Thanksgiving.

But not for Thanksgiving.

Odds are against much snow that early anywhere in North America. But, they may luck out.

just enjoy the mountains and the holiday and the friends and if you happen to have snow then love it. like johnl said, too darn early in the season anywhere. I remember reading a nice article about how before snowmaking there were few ski areas even open before Christmas.
