Pittsburgh Pirates 62-42 .596 0.5 GB, currently in the first Wild Card spot. Just whooped the first place Cards in the first game of a big series.
20 more wins for a .500 finish, with 58 games to go, but the cruel months of August and September are coming up. Does hell finally freeze over this year?
Hope they do it. I'll never forget Maz's home run in the 1960 World Series. I've had a soft spot for the Pirates ever since.
I'm not a Pirates fan (Cubs fan, so obviously I've got my own issues), but I did root for them in the NLCS during the Sid Bream game...it would be nice to see the Pirates make the playoffs this year - they have some good young players and have a chance to be a contending team for several years.

I'll be rooting for the Cubbies at The Friendly Confines this Saturday. Along with maybe a pre game/post game pop or two at Murphy's, Bernie's, Sluggers, Goose Island, Gibsons, The Lodge, etc. Not my first rodeo in Chicago.
Fermi Labs your Cubs connection?
Look for me at the Pirates game on Saturday. I'll be the guy asleep by the 4th inning.
That was the worst baseball moment of my life. Watching him limp and gimp around 3rd beating a weak throw from a pre steroid Barry Bonds from left field.
JohnL,
I'm actually from the Chicago area, although I did also work at Fermi for several years. FWIW most of the non-Chicagoans at Fermi seemed to gravitate to the White Sox.
Have fun in Chicago - it's a great city, but it sounds like you know that. If it were closer to any mountains I probably would not have left (although the lakefront in the summer is pretty sweet).

JohnL,
I think its more about the beer than the baseball!!
Walk off homer, Pirates, 4-3. Raise the Jolly Roger!

Aaaaar!!!! Raising a bottle or rum is more fun than raising the Jolly Roger.
August 6th, best record in the majors (by percentage points) and 11.5 games ahead for a playoff spot!
But, remember August/September of 2011 and 2012.
2012 #Natitude has turned into 2013 #Suckitude, so glad to see the Buccos doing well.
I was a Pirates fan from 1971 to 1992, living in Connecticut, Vermont, North Carolina and Virginia. Quit in disgust after the disbanding of the team in 1993. Followed the O's a bit (lived in Maryland for a while), but I've been a Nats fan since 2005.
Typing this from memory:
C - Sanguillen, Sands
1B - Robertson
2B - Cash, Maz
3B - Hebner
SS - J. Hernandez, Alley
LF - Pops
CF - Scoops
RF - El Clemente
OF - Davillio, Clines
SP - Blass, Cocaine Ellis, Moose, Kison
RP - Guisti, R. Hernandez, L. Walker
Got 20 out of 25. Need to google whom I'm missing. Del Canton? Grant? There was I think a SP from the Cards, Nellie Briles?
Briles, Johnson, Veale, Miller, Milt May, Pagan.
Moose, Veale, Lamb. Road kill dinner.
Maury Wills Mad Dog Maddox, Phil Garner, all third base?
No love for the "Cobra", Dave Parker in the OF?
Aug 31. 78-56 in a virtual tie for first in the division. 4th best record in baseball.
Unless an asteroid hits Pittsburgh, a winning season will happen.
If the Pirates can finally win, why can't Laurel Mountain re-open?
Decisive win last night. Some nice fireworks too!!
82 wins. The 20(?) year streak is over.
Pirates make MLB playoffs for the first time in 21 years! I think this is going to be a big snow year:-)
A fitting ending last night with a play at the plate that DID NOT involve the Pirates elimination.
Hopefully this accomplishment means there will be a little less bashing of Nutting on this site,(?)
The Colonel
Don't hold your breath, Colonel. Not to many Pirate fans here but a lot of dissappointed 7S, HV, and LM fans.
So, now that there will be the FIRST EVER playoff game at PNC Park, who's going?
I made it to the game last night. The environment was incredible.
We ended up with standing room only tix and stood on the 2nd level near home plate. A few Reds fans left in the 7th and we took their seats until the end.
Nice, I would have liked to been there for the afterparty, bet that was a blast.

Cards have been hard on the Nationals the last couple of years. Go Pirates. Nutting's on a roll and turned a new leaf:-)
And the Cards Wacha has a no-hitter/perfect game going. (Which hopefully I just jinxed by mentioning it.)
Sadly, we must LTJR (Lower The Jolly Roger). That was a hellava season.
Thx to them Buccos for allow me to enjoy baseball in the 'burgh this season.
Mr Weatherman, it can now start snowing.
While they are a model franchise, the Cards are like cockroaches. You just can't stamp them out.
