Snowshoe=Nov 27
Canaan Valley Resort=Dec 14
...any more
..sorry, just killing time until I can start the "who's gonna blow the hardest" thread...
It appears that the weather pattern could provide us with opportunities for a Thanksgiving start to the ski season. However, I understand the long range forcast is predicting a warm December.
Based on the blog entry on Oct. 9, sounds like Wintergreen has Dec. 14 as their target date for being open. Have installed new pipes to increase snowmaking capacity on the upper section of Eagles Swoop.
Massanutten posted for the first time on their snow conditions page on Oct. 12. They are also hoping to be open mid-December. Fingers crossed.
...I am still unsure about the "message" of the latest statement made on their official facebook page, but it seems that Timberline is maybe announcing an opening day for the ski season this year on Black Friday!
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Timberline-Four-Seasons-Resort-Official-Page-WV/162195150518076
Tonite/tomorrow nite...the 12th,13,14th..then thats it till maybe the nite of the 23rd (snowmaking)....as of this morns long range..thats my interpretation.
Gonna have to come on hard the last 10 days..Im not feeling it....right now at least..till I change my mind...wont b anything to get excited about anyhoot..
We could get a monster blizzard before hand and we would just have midstation.....Im heading to Mexico...
PS...B watching for ur blowhard thread Tucker!
..received a mass email/press release this afternoon that Timberline is actually planning on opening on Dec 12...not sure what the facebook post is about for black friday...
from the Wisp's facebook page...." each year we shoot for the Friday after thanksgiving, weather permitting"...
Snowshoe = NOv 27
Canaan Valley Resort = Dec 14
Timberline = Dec 12
Wintergreen = Dec 13
...ok, I hate to report bad opening dates here, but I am really confused...can someon help me...from timberline's facebook page----"We open December 6-8. We all know that through the years. Right?"...so I guess Timberline is opening sometime between Dec. 6-8 now??

Wut about the Black Friday tease?
Heard from Amos this afternoon that we can start making snow any day we want, and open any time we like. So much for the race to open. If you want to ski early, book now. Lots of times people aren't thinking about it on Black Friday. Fred

So whats this mean? They saved enough money by not having a Halloween Party that they can open earlier?

I think it means that they need someone other than Fred to manage their social media strategy. They have to lose business because of things like this. All of the posts are cryptic, and most are filled with misinformation.
i dunno from the web cam today it looked like they were doing more than blowing the mice out

Jimmy, u know as much about these things as I do. Who's running the show up there? Is it Doc or Fred? I lost my scorecard last time I ate in the pub.
Posted 5 minutes ago on Tline FB page:
Correction from previous post. The official opening day is December 12 as posted on our website; that is barring us getting significant amounts of snow. Let's of course hope that we do!
Massanutten website says that Nov. 30 is possible if cold comes as predicted.
Wintergreen will start making snow this weekend.

Your move, Timberline.
That sounds like a really aggressive time table based on the snow they have now. http://www.resortcams.com/webcameras-canaan-valley-resort.php Looks like timberline has made a lot more.

Add Roundtop and Whitetail to the list of opening Friday as well.
Bryce also announced for this Friday, but check first given the rain last night.

Did I mention, the resort that was criticized by some on DCSki for blowing snow real early, and continued blowing snow whenever the opportunity presented itself, SNOWSHOE...pushed the gigantic pile around and opened this morning.
Enjoyed looking at the web cam and seeing people sliding and taking lessons.
The Colonel

Shhhhh! Don't jinx it!
From the Massanutten website:
"UPDATED 11/29/13 at 9:00 am - The Ski Slopes will be open on Saturday 11/30 and Sunday 12/1 from 9am - 4:30pm. We plan to have Diamond Jim, Upper & Lower Showtime, Geronimo, Nutten-To-It, Southern Comfort, and possibly the CMB Terrain Park open. NO NIGHT SKIING AVAILABLE."
I'm planning on being there with my family on Saturday.
There's some smart bidness people running those ski areas. Give the customer what they want, eh?
edit: 7 spings today
Hidden Valley PA??
Is Massanutten the only open ski area to have a skiable expert slope?

Ya T, I figgered you would be on your way to Whitetail by now, I hear the road is open ;). You are right, seems like every ski area in the mid atlantic is opening today or tomorrow.

Colonel, with all due respect, I don't read those comments and questions (including mine) as criticism of Snowshoe. Speaking just for myself, I was simply curious.
Glad to see the early start to snowmaking and the season!
Woody
lol...
"Arguably one of the best starts of the snowmaking season in recent Timberline history. One foot of snow outside ticket window, some blown over from snow guns and five inches in the woods. Guns already moved over from White Lighning over to Dew Drop and Winterset Trail. It looks like scheduled December 7 snowmobile race (called a hill climb) up White Out and Upper White Lightming is a go. lower terminal platform for the zip line is in place and we're still on schedule to open the zip-line for early ski season. Ziplines
WTF
What a great place to strart a ski area
I'm going skiing at Mad River Mountain in Ohio today. Calling it a mountain is a stretch(300 feet of verticle), but it will still be good to get the first turns of the season in. Never in my wildest dreams did I think an ohio ski place could open before timberline. What a joke of a hill Fred runs.
Way to go TL, open so snowmobiles can tear up the slopes!!!
TL, the best little hill you cannot ski!
The Colonel
Hope it rains next Saturday. Followed by a flash freeze. With some work by Amos, Whales on WL...
Snowmobile race? What idiot came up with that idea? That's the reason they are not opening until the 12th... I wonder what the ownrs are thinking? For those of us who are property owners, that really helps a hell of a lot with rentals.....

No that's the reason they started making snow the second week of november. Here is all you want to know about snowmobile race
Sounds like they will be the priority at the end of the season as well.

March 30
Closing Day for Skiing
April 5
Tentative Snow Mobile Race
Better not move the Snow Mobile Race up!!!!!!!!! Snow mobile dips will be surprised at how much better than average snow cover they had last April.
...gonna be a warm week all weel with some rain in the valley...should be some sloppy, slush flyin, snowmobilling racin'...looks like the guns are still on lightinn' at tsline(seems they still need to blow a lot of snow on lighnin' to open with the base they typically blow, atleast looks like from the parking lot)...wonder if they will pull the guns off the slope for race and then back onto slope...seems like a lot of work when they are already set to go---I guess they must be makin bank from race to make those kinds of moves though...hard to tell not knowin'--i just make donuts...
From Canaan’s Valley Resort:
“It’s official - the ski area will open next weekend, Saturday, December 7th for the 13-14 ski season. A minimum of 7 trails and 2 lifts will be available and opened to the top of the mountain! Visit the website for special room rates and discount lift ticket deals offered next weekend. Think snow!”
”¦get a discounted, newly renovated room at Canaan Lodge for the weekend, Ski Canaan valley resort Saturday, Jack Frost party Saturday Night at whitegrass to kick off the ski season w/ short drive back to Canaan Lodge”¦if you don't like skiing you could head over to tsline to watch snowmobills”¦
Hmmm.... Wonder where their priorities lie. If they wouldn't have sold off all the lower land to Fish and Wildlife, they could have one hell of a raced off piste with a heavy dump. My question is, why aren't other mountains trying to get sonwmobile races? Maybe the same reason other mountains aren't trying to get motorcycle races......

Here is at least one (albeit vertically challenged) that gave up skiing entirely for "motorcycle races."

Could be a long drive back to CV Lodge with all of the free beer that Chip is saying they're going have. Not to mention the Shotski, moonshine, and other fun stuff that will be floating around...

There is a history of motorcycle races in WV. From Wikipedia entry for Grand National Cross Country:
"In the mid-1970s Dave Coombs was contacted by a preacher from a church in a small West Virginia town. The preacher wanted to help the economy of his struggling town by hosting a motorcycle race. Dave Coombs saw major potential in the land and thought that a grand prix style race through the town and surrounding country side would be special enough to bring visitors to the town.
He named this race The Blackwater 100. The name "Blackwater" originated from nearby Blackwater Falls and the Blackwater River, while 100 for the number of miles in the race. The land was rugged, which would make the race itself one would be difficult for riders and their machines. The race became popular when Dave invited a group of magazine editors from California, who went back and wrote about their experiences with the rugged race. Eventually, Blackwater would become known as "America's Toughest Race"
The Blackwater 100 is now held at Snowshoe each summer.
