Just got back from Snowshoe today --

Slopes are in absolutely beautiful condition... US Air Force did a fly over of the Western Territory around ~2pm (3rd one I have seen in the past 2 years). A lone F-18.

Blue skies, this weekend should be magnificant for those of you venturing up there.

Last spring over a period of 3 days, a pair of F-18's and several other AF jets flew over Snowshoe.

We see Navy or Air Force training flights in Canaan and down the Blackwater Canyon a good bit too. It always kind of surpises you to see a jet fighter go ripping by when you are out fishing or hiking.

I saw a pair of F15s go down CV about five days after 9/11. Probably good training terrirtory for Afghanistan.

I think its a good training area in general.
They've been flying up there for a long time, well before 9/11. Fairly low population and rugged terrain thats close to the Va/MD/DC military bases.

The Navy has bee flying there for years. My brother-in-law is an ex-navy pilot and he says that he flew there in the 70's. It seems those valleys are used for mountain training for the Navy pilots from Oceana. Just about every time we are up at SS we see/hear those planes. I find it really cool and impressive to see those guys swooping down between the mountain tops; I always stop to watch.

Those planes visit us regularly on any clear day.. sometimes they even swing by at night.
There is never just one if you see one wait about 3 seconds and look for the other. It's always neat to see a plane about a 100 or 200 feet up banked over one of the lodges. The presidential helicopter flew up ballhooter lift a couple weeks ago. *that was a surprise*

Sorry to bring up a 10 year old thread but I googled "Snowshoe Fighter Jet" and this came up first.

I was riding up Powder Monkey Lift and the time was approx 10:30 AM this past Saturday.  A jet came from up from our right sort of hugging the mountain at an angle.  He could not have been 500 - 1000 ft above us.  LOUD and FAST.

I've never seen that in all my years at the shoe.  Definitely awesome.  And, of course, my son's Go Pro was off so I have no pics / video.
