(OK, what is the trick to embedding an image)

Use the image tag in the editor (reply box.) It is just to the right of the flag icon. Mouse over tool tips labels the icon Image. Just paste the publically accessible URL for the image (photobucket in your case) in the dialog box.

How do you copy photos from a drive on your computer into a post? I have never been able to get that to work.

signup for photobucket, google+, picassa, or something - they're free.   upload your photos.   then do what johnl says.
