Bob Leffler mention rain also in the last email he sent about this weekends storm:     (got maybe 4" of snow, but only got a short spit of mixed precip, but the temp did get up to almost 40 last evening. now colder windy and snowing a little)

"Your Fearless Canaan Weatherman continues to disagree with some forecasts out there calling for up to 6-to-9 inches of snow from this system.  I am sticking with my 2-to-4 inch snow forecast made days ago for today.

I see mainly light snow, occasionally falling moderately at times.  Warmer air coming in on south and southeasterly winds will eventually usher in above freezing temperatures all the way up to cloud level, changing the snow to sleet, freezing rain and just plain rain later this afternoon or in the early evening.  I expect only light amounts of mixed precipitation and/or rain to fall during this time.

Early Sunday morning between 2 and 4 a.m., as the center of the disturbance moves to the northeast, winds will back to the NW, ushering in colder air at all levels.  This should being several days of fluffy, upslope mountain-top snows which will be intermittent and on the light side in nature and continue through around Wednesday afternoon.  Daily (24-hr.)snowfall totals from Sunday through Wednesday should be in the 1-to-3 inch range.

After that, it appears a strong but brief warm-up with generous rains will overspread the high country next weekend but that's pretty far out so we won't hang our hats on that yet.

Just curious...with a show of hands..mean ..posts..how many of you ck out the daily model runs?...I nevet miss more than one or two runs at a time all winter. I do think that weather fcasting will become automated overtime...everything will be clearly put down with maps and figures and it will be all generated by the computer models. No more weathermen n women needed...the Fearless weather dude and all his dedicated hard work will be a thing of the past... They taught me about automation many..many years ago in school...its happening everywhere...all those laborers we bring up from mexico to pick our lettuce ect... could have been automated...actually..years ago...

Ps part two..... I envision a time where you will go to google maps..put in your address and then click on a weather link and you will be able to see an hour by hour fcast....sleep in sat morn..then go shopping and take the dogs to the park at noon because the rain will end at 11 and the temp will get comfortable by then...

I don't.  I just google:  NWS and name and state of town and read local 5 day report.

Be careful about all that automation that they don't automate skiing and we all stay in bed while it transpires virtually in our heads.

What are Mr. Leffler and Mr. Fish saying about Saturday in the valley? Doesn't look to be a soaking rain in the current forecast?

Yeh...Looks like a chc for scattered showers sat but Rain for Sun...Its all about the timing in long range "watchouts".for weekend weather..it could look like a  washout a week before but then the front and brunt of the moisture falls overnite Sat for example...Just think Snow n cold for the post December thaw!!

Whitetail Saturday night was surprisingly good. Skied in a baselayer and shell, no insulation, and the snow was good - no mashed potatoes - "hero"snow.  Sunday night however, was entirely different.  Even though temps were high it was quite breezy and the snow was pretty firm.  By closing time my feet were getting quite a "massage" as I went down the hill.

My son would agree.  He said Sat was a superb spring skiing day at Liberty, just 2.5 months early.  Sunday was more soggy.

Weather?  I don't care for now.  In Chicago with wife, son, daughter in law, and most important, 2 year old grand daughter who is a delight.  It is now 5 deg outside and will be colder when we fly to SF tomorrow to see daughters family with 3 grand sons.  Skiing will happen later.  Life is good!

Just got this message below from the 'fearless canaan weatherman'.... -20F with -30 to -40F windchill!  This is gonna put my new house to the test for sure!!!  Ironically, the guy who just finished building it, will be at the beach? :)

Subject: Potential for Blizzard and Dangerous Record Cold For WV High-Country

We are still on track for a potent 3-to 6-inches of windblown snow today into Friday morning followed by very cold temperatures however that is not the primary intent of this statement.

Your Fearless Canaan Weatherman is giving you a heads-up for the potential for blizzard conditions Sunday night into Monday followed by record low temperatures that could cause damage to homes and vehicles not winterized for this level of extreme low winter temperatures.

Current model guidance suggests to me that blizzard conditions could accompany 4-to-8 inches of powder driven on winds gusting to 50 MPH Sunday night into Monday night will be followed by air temperatures that could fall below -10 F to -15 F Monday afternoon at 3,000 ft. and above. Some -20 F to -25 F minimum temperatures are possible Tuesday morning.  On Monday, strong winds and frigid, falling temperatures could produce wind-chill values in the -30 F to -40 F range by early evening!

Again, this is only a heads-up for a potentially very dangerous and damaging situation.

I recommend you take advance action to ready exposed building pipes and vehicles for these extremely low temperatures and wind chills which will remove heat rapidly from unheated crawl spaces, etc.  I will of course continue to monitor the situation as it develops and issue updates.

Stay tuned to your local National Weather Service forecasts for this potentially very dangerous developing situation.

Thanks for posting that Chaga - might book out of CV a bit early on Sunday to escape that weather.  Wonder when the high winds are going to start on Sunday.  NOAA is still forecasting warm in CV for Sunday.

Charleston Weather Bureau forecasting an air (not wind chill) low temp for Monday night at Snowshoe of -22 degrees, with high on Tues of -4 degrees.  And they also call for "breezy" conditions!.  That's plenty cold, but not the coldest I have personally experienced - that was an air temp of -41 degrees two nights while skiing at Mt Sutton in Canada in the early 1970s.  Thankfully there was no wind!  Taking a deep breath was brutal, and the inside of your nose froze!  High temp on the Wed between these two cold nights was a negative 22F.  We skied, but a warming break was a necessity after 1 or 2 runs to prevent frostbite!  Quite a trip, Sat morning we were loading the car in a light rain, in our tee shirts at 40F, a 81 degree temp change in just a couple of days!  Felt balmy.

what's the coldest temp you have personally experienced or skied during?

1985 while at WVU on Super Bowl Sunday it got down to near -20 and classes were cancelled Monday.  We had a small party and burned coal in the fireplace.  Most of us wore shorts as it got so hot in the living room.  The beer that was left out on the porch burst when it froze overnight.

I also remember a mini food fight with peanuts.  We found peanuts for months.

Oh to be young and irresponsible again.

Just had my coldest ski day as an adult today at Elk.  Temps never got above 7 or 8.  Blue skies and pretty, but we were going in after 2-3 runs.  With 1000 vertical, that wasnt' much time at all.  Only took the quad twice because it's a long ride up.  The double protected by the planted evergreens was better.

That's seriously cold.  This could start a "what's the coldest temps you ever skied in" thread.  I was on a trip to VT in Feb 1979 when a bank thermometer (not wind chill) read -37 in Rutland while we rode to Killington.  Later in the morning I saw a sign beside a chairlift that said it had warmed up to -17.  We skied, but had every inch of skin covered and went in a few times to warm up.

Vince packed the car this morning with his ski gear.  He's supposed to do an instructor's clinic tonight at Liberty after he leaves work.  It's -6 at Liberty this morning.  He's going to call before driving up there tonight to make sure it's still on.

Was 4 at Whitetail at 11:30am yesterday.  Luckily the wind had already died down.  Went up to 9 by the time I left around 2:00pm. Probably 100 cars in the parking lot.  Everything was open except Exhibition.  Snow guns blowing on several of the black runs.  A friend gave me a voucher so it was worth the stop for a first look at Whitetail.  Didn't realize the place was relatively new.  The lodge is very nice.  There was a Mountain Host greeting people walking in from the parking lot.  He was in a much better mood than the lifties.

The Hosts are always happy.  I went there after work last night for several runs of connecting the yellow gun dots.  Was probably 9-10 degrees then and no wind.  Stayed on the high-speed to minimize the up times.  Seems like it was worth it to go.  I'd be kicking myself if I didn't.  Didn't need to stay long to get a fix

The roller coaster continues:

  • Friday Night A chance of rain, mainly after 2am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 38. East wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south 11 to 16 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Rain. High near 51. South wind 14 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
  • Saturday Night Rain and snow showers likely, becoming all snow after 10pm. Cloudy, with a low around 28. Breezy. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.
  • Sunday A chance of snow showers before 8am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 36. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

Looks like race skis for Sunday.

Jimmy - are you insinuating that they didn't blow during that cold spell?  I don't know how that is possible!!  Upper Almost Heaven has had piles of snow stashed on it since New Years and Upper Thunderstruck is bare.  I would have thought that with that cold weather they could have finished AH and started on Thunderstruck.  Is it possible it was too windy and cold to blow?

They better be blowing hard and often next week (but early week temps look dicey.) Holiday weekend next weekend. They need Upper Thunder and Twister open to handle the tourists, plus The Drop needs refreshing.

It would be a great mountain to put a ski area.

They have guns set up on Twister. The neglected to push out Upper Heaven today. They did spend the entire day pushing out the "terrain park" with one groomer and Lower Dew Drop with 2 other groomers. Didn't see a bit of snow being blown all day.

Oh yeah, The Drop does need some lovin' and the 'Zipline' looks sad...

Never really rained at Mnut today.  Just clouds in the morning.  Foggy and misty with some drizzle in the afternoon.  Snow stayed pretty nice since temps were in the high 30's mostly.
