If you can only go on one of the two weekends, which one is better? The weather look very promising for the upcoming weekend but not sure how much more terrain will open. I am thinking to hit both CV and Timberline.
planning ski trips in advance in the mid-atlantic is risky!... but obviously necessary since people have jobs and families.
This week looks to be cold and snowy all the way into the weekend, so next weekend is promising, so go for it. Weather is not reliable more than 5 days out, so the weekend after next is an unknown.
For the gung ho spontaneous folks.... I would tend to say based on the winter storm warnings....tomorrow and the next will be the best powder days so far this year.,
Thanks Chaga! Good advice.. yeah, I wish I could be on the slope today! Planning with big groups last minute is tough, can't seem to find lodging that everyone can stay together this weekend..
Maybe things don't depend entirely on the weather.
Just found this posted 1/22/14 on the Official Timberline Facebook page:
" Troop 80 from Mechanicsburg, PA. Coming to visit...Get the Mt ready baby...YeeeeeHaaaa!!! "
Moral of the story is to really go as soon as you can when the condition is great as well as never trust weather forecast more than 5 days out.. it seem like it's going to rain this weekend in the valley...
Let's hope it doesn't rain much this weekend. We've had a house booked at WISP for months. Figures it's been subfreezing for the past 2 weeks and the weekend vacation might not be as good as it could be. No worries though the beer is ice cold and the house has a hot tub, It could be a lot worse!

Yes and the slope should be relatively less crowded as it's superbowl weekend.. Definitely will spend more time for beer and hot tub!
What a bummer though, I really was looking forward to awesome condition for the weekend but seem like the cold suddenly decide to take a break just on Saturday... it will be 46 F in this Sat in the valley with a chance of shower..
I think Saturday's morning will be pretty nice... Sunday will be classic-east-coast-freeze-after-thaw sliding on ice?

A brief warm-up with just a tad of nair should consolidate the base in the trees. It will pay dividends the rest of the season.
Surface conditions on the trails were incredible last weekend, but the tree skiing was marginal/not possible in most areas. There was a fair amount of snow in the trees, but it was very light cold smoke. As a result, your skis punched through to the base. (Areas that had blow-in from the snow guns were the exception.)
come ski em at WG where some glades are manicured with tweezers and vacuumed up with the electrolux so they can be skied in low snow :)

Yeah right. You should see that guy with his heels freed. It's quite "comical"
For those who have been to Timberline recently did it look like they were blowing any on upper Thunderstruck? I cannot remember for a long time it being closed this late in the year, and it makes no sense since I personally think that is the best groomed trail at Tline..
Hey guys, I've been lurking for awhile now, just moved up to DC for an internship....
Anyway, I was up at Timberline last weekend. Huge whales on Thunderstruck. I was talking to somebody on the lift who said White Lightning would be closed this weekend for races, and that they figured the plan was to have Thunderstruck open to replace it. People were poaching next to the whales and seemed to be doing pretty well too.
Thunderstruck was open! The condition was not as bad as I thought it would be given the warm temp on Saturday. Sunday was a bit crowded given that it's a superbowl weekend.
The best thing is that I was able to drive to the valley in 2.5 hour from Vienna, VA!
Pretty much all the slopes at T-Line that matter are open now. Thunderdraft skied really well on Saturday being the beneficiary of the snow making on Thunderstruck. Saturday was probably the best day of the season - beautiful day and the snow held up. Longest lines of the year but never seemed crowded on the slopes. Sunday was empty - you could ski on to the lift all day but the weather was crappy. The warm weather consolidated the snow in the woods so hopefully the snow they get this week will be enough to make the tree skiing better than sketchy.
