Going to Wisp this weekend, but looking to leave early on Friday and ski one of these two places.  I've been to TImberline once, but never Canaan Valley.  According to the snow reports, Canaan seems to have the better conditions.  Timberline is reporting thin conditions on some slopes and not everything is open.  Not sure how that could be given the weather and snow over the last couple of weeks.  I don't ski trees, but will ski anything else.

I don't know if it matters to you or not (sorry, couldn't help myself), but timberline events posted on their snow report say there are "collegial races" this weekend...there might be a bunch of racers on slopes/lift lines, and you might want to call over there and see if they are shutting down any slopes to public to hold races...

I was looking to do one of these two places on Friday.  I'll be at wisp on Saturday and Sunday.

Canaan Valley doesn't have as much vertical as Timberline. Cruising is more fun more at T-Line plus they have glades and steep trails like OTW. With that saying, Canaan Valley can be quite magical when most of the trails are open (it's quite rare). This weekend, I will be in the valley and will probably head to Canaan on Saturday and T-line on Sunday.

All the main trails were open this past weekend except Upper Thunderstruck. Looking at the amount of snow made on it, they should be able to open it real soon. Upper Dew Drop was open; I don't know why it is currently listed as closed. Maybe they plan on refreshing the base?

All the closed/thin cover trails are either 1) Glades or 2) natural snow only trails (all relatively short.) So if you want truth in advertising, they really should be labelled as thin cover the entire season.

As an add on to this thread, can anyone explain why Wisp isn't 100% open?  Do they keep some trails closed during the week and open them on the weekend?

The family and I ski at Wisp on a regular basis.  The new Owner doesn't seem to want to spend the $ to make snow, even thou the new Owner has increased their weekday rates and have eliminated many of the "deals", including their White Friday sale.

If you have never been to CVR you should go there just to check it out.

I ended up skiing at Canaan on Friday.  The conditions were great - sunshine, 35 degrees, plenty of snow, no lift lines.  Now I can say I've been to both places.
