DCSki Gathering at Timberline, WV Feb 21-24, 2014

Folks, just want to post a heads-up for those who haven’t heard and may be interested. A gang of DCSki (and Epicski) aficionados are planning to gather at Timberline Ski Area in WV over the weekend of Feb 21-24, 2014. Some of us have been plotting this for a while and are renting group house(s), but day trippers and last minute DIY participants are most welcome to join us for turns. Most of the action will be focused on Timberline, but some in the group may also possibly visit nearby Canaan Valley and Whitegrass ski facilities.

We’ve done this annually the past few years at Mid-Atlantic locations with typically about 2-3 dozen participants including a friendly mix of day trippers and overnighters of varied abilities. It’s likely some/all of the group will be skiing for parts of Fri, Sat, Sun, and Mon with the biggest attendance on Saturday and Sunday. The age spread of past participants ranged from 7 to 70, originating from NC, SC, OH, VA, MD, WV, PA, DC, and beyond. As the date approaches this would be a good place to share info about attendance, conditions, tickets, directions, etc.

Think Snow,
Jim K.

Jim.  I'll be in the valley anyway and am hoping that the hill won't be too busy and i'll be able to hook up with the gang.

Jim,

As luck would have it I was already looking into being there that weekend. I'm actually trying to arrange a trip for my family (me, wife, and 2 kids) plus 3 other friends. Is there any way we can get in touch with people who are trying to arrange the group housing? Feel free to PM me.

Send Marznc a PM.  Believe she is actively trying to fill a second house.  Our first place is full.

I must send regrets.  By this time next week I'll be in Chicago visiting my granddaughter, and of course her parents, enroute to Tahoe, this years ski road trip destination.  Tahoe because my daughter and family moved to the East Bay a year ago and have their pass at Kirkwood, so I got one there too.  So far it has been a poor season there.  The boys want to know why they left great skiing in VT for crappy skiing in CA.  I told them not to worry, when it snows in the Sierra it really snows.  Hope I don't have to eat those words.  I'll return here ~ early April.  Order up one of those early apr powder dumps in the sods for me.  Meanwhile have a blast and make a turn or two for me at Timberline.  You could raise a glass or two also.  :)

Thanks Jimmy.  I actually have a life long history of bringing massive dumps on first trips to new (for me) areas.  Some examples;

Taos, 30"

big Sky, 36"

mammoth, 9 feet over 6 days

I've never been to Kirkwood before.  Anyone want to join?  :)

I've been to Kirkwood once and would love to return.   Unfortunately, it was dumping SO MUCH that half the mountain was closed the whole weekend.   So maybe the first time luck prevalis.  Heavy thick snow as well, take your big sticks.

Yikes, I just went to purchase tickets online for Saturday through Sunday but no tickets that begin on Saturday are available. 2 day tickets beginning Friday are available (Fri to Sat.) and you can still get 2 day Sunday to Monday but no Saturday tickets. Did everybody already buy lift tickets for the Gathering?

You were checking on Liftopia, right? If a date is sold out do any more ever become available?

Pretty sure in some of my past purchases/tracking of Liftopia I've seen sold out days renewed with more ticket offerings at other mtns.  You'd think at T-line when things quiet down after Pres Weekend they'd be glad to keep offering tics at the Liftopia price, so I'd keep checking.  We are still a couple weeks out.

Great.  One of the ways we identify ourselves is by tieing a red ribbon to our ski poles, but I'm sure we'll post some meeting times/places here as the date gets close and can also pm cell numbers if necessary.

Most likely I'm not going to make it to Tline this time.  Things just aren't falling into place.  Hope the snow storms continue for you all between now and Feb. 21.

We've had a vacancy come up in our slopeside house for this event at Timberline, WV, Feb 21-24.  A private bedroom is available for all three nights with a queen bed, Fri - Sun.  For a couple in this room it would cost $250 total, this includes all meals pot luck style.  Post here or send me a PM for details.  First come, first serve.  This is a nice house and Timberline just got one foot of snow.  You will be sharing the house with about ten other enthusiastic snow riders.
