Might try to get a couple days of before Christmas skiing in at Snowshoe. Will be leaving Richmoond around 4:00pm on a Sunday; looking for fastest route.

Also looking for info on best/fastest route from Richmond to Canaan Valley.

Thanks for the help!

To TLine and Canaan, take 64W to 81N. Exit 257 Broadway and take 259W. Stay on 259 into WV to Corridor H (48) in Baker. Then of course, Corridor H west.

259 is a good road with lots of passing lanes and little in the way of twisty stuff.

I do not recall seeing you post before, so welcome to DCSki!

Thanks! I'm mostly a lurker. From my house about 30 miles south of the I81/I64 split near Staunton, it takes a little less than 3 hours. Google Maps might be able to give you a good estimate from your location.

259 would be a good road at night, likely with little to no traffic. It's also still in the downslope, so weather worries might be less...until you get to the power plant at Bismarck of course. Lots of passing lanes, especially in the WV section, makes it easy to dispatch dawdlers.

Number one thing I'd worry about at night are deer.

Richmond to Snowshoe

I64W, I81N,take exit 225 on 262 around north side of Staunton, 250W to Monterey, then 220S, turn right on 84, right on 92N, turns into 28, left on 66 through Cass, then right onto back entrance up to Snowshoe. Good Luck!

And assuming good weather in nighttime, how long should trip take and how many miles roughly from Stsunton.

Thanks for replies,

Double amen.

Just missed hitting a deer at 70 mph on one of the down stretches of Corr H last year. Darted right in front of me. In a couple of sections, I try to scan the side of the road for critters, but you can only see so much in the dark.

In a couple of  likely crossing spots, I'm off the accelerator.

Best way to avoid deer is to drive during daylight hours.  Just sayin.

It's a little over 2 hours from Staunton if you go out 250. There are several ridges to cross on 250 and lots of slow twisty bits, but it's the shortest route.

If you're in the mood for an extra 60 miles and no switchbacks, you can stay on I64W until White Sulphur Springs, WV, then take 92N to Cass. That gives you more interstate, and 92 is a good mostly-straight road all the way to Cass, with lots of passing lanes. It's also in the downslope until you hit Cass. It's definitely longer, but to me it's a bit of a wash because I can cover ground quicker on I64 & 92.

Interesting. From Charlottesville, I have always taken the first exit south of the I81/I64 interchange (exit 220, I think) to 262 (on the south side of Staunton), to 254W/42S/39W/92N. About 15 miles longer than the above route. For some reason I had the impression that 250 W was exceptionally twisty even by WV standards, but perhaps I should give it a try.

250 W is very twisty, we sometimes like to go that way so we can stop at Shennadoah Pizza in Staunton, but we don't do it when my son is in the car because he gets very car sick on that section of 250

259 is a good road with lots of passing lanes and little in the way of twisty stuff.

If I know that the roads will be clear, I take exit 243 when going north on I-81. From there I can get to 33W, then follow that to  32N in Harman. This cuts out the part of 259 that takes you further north then you need to go (especially if you are heading directly to the ski areas rather than Davis/Thomas). This route requires going over 3 legitimate mountain passes so if conditions are iffy then the 259W route is the better option. As it is my suggested route only saves you 10 minutes or so (even though it is 35 miles less driving).

Once Corridor-H goes all the way to Thomas I will probably switch my default route to the 259W option.
