Some of my favorite local areas plan to open this Thursday, January 7th!! But check the websites or phone them before you go. Liberty, Whitetail, and Roundtop have had cold weather and have been blowing snow. It may be rain here, but that could be snow in the mountains,  Snowshoe and Wisp have several trails open. Of course, the West has tons of snow, which compensates for the past sparse years.

The local areas have had a bad start so far - that hurts all of us who work or play in the sports, If you can, try to support them  and also try out their new bars, restaurants, and hotels!  Think cold, Connie Lawn

Whitetail was in great shape in the morning.  Skied for 3plus hours. Snow looked chunky, but it was dry so it skied pretty smooth.  When we were leaving it got a bit warmer and snow got heavy.  Left when I had early season jelly legs!!  TAKE A SNOW DAY.  Looks like if the nights are cold WT wll open another Blue or two and two more Greens by the weekend if the rain holds off.  Say your prayers.

I caught the 5th chair for first tracks at WT, got in 3 runs down Fanciful, then was on the formal 1st chair.  There was a 3some standing for the chair, and I figured it was some sort of misdemeanor, at least, to not fill the quad's seats for the 1st chair... so I slid right up.  Great corduroy, and yes- it chunked up by 9:45 or so, but skied nicely, since it was so cold (still low 20s by then).  Some ungroomed softies, perfect for leaving railroad tracks, on the far left of lower Angel/Jib as you came in towards the lift area.

Left WT at 10:15 to head to Liberty.  After some lunch, was on the lift there by 11:45, much warmer by then but Whitney skied nicely straight down the middle, which was a rare treat.  The Heavnely/Whitney mixing bowl up top provided the usual mini-bumps and drops, and made a perfect little playground with no crowds.  A beautiful little ridge down most of lower Ultra was fun to hop back and forth over, though nobody seemed to be hitting it.  Seemed to be lots more boarders than skiers today?

The sticky mashed potatoes were rearing their heads by about 2, so I called it a day at 2:15ish.

Both Eastwinds have significant coverage already- not much showing through, and upper may almost have enough, though not for the big bumps they let grow.  One more good night, maybe?

BTW, the front 1/3 of the parking lot is now paved!  I didn't go over to the new hotel area, but it looks pretty nice.

Went to liberty for a few hours today. Pretty empty for a Saturday, snow was soft and a bit choppy but with very good coverage. I did run in to one of the new restaurants to grab a beer, and walked around the lobby of the new building. They did a very nice job, the bar at I believe the owl and the eagle has 20 craft beers on tap and all the comments I heard regarding the food were positive, if you visit liberty it is worth checking out.

Was at Liberty again tonight. Busy for a week night...which I guess is a good thing. But their snow making improvements are VERY noticeable. The have one blue, one black and some terrain parks not open at the moment, ( the rest is open, and had great snow tonight) and they opened last Wednesday. I know the snow time resorts rely on snow making more than anyone else...but right now snow time is getting more terrain open in smaller snowmaking windows than anyone else and it is quite impressive.
