Win Smith, Sugarbush Prez/Owner, issued a nice closing season article via email (probably find it on their website also). As you might guess it laments this season's poor snowfall, but also included is an interesting trend looking at historical bad seasons and the season that follows....

Year   Low Total Following Year
'73/'74 186" 307"
'79/'80 138" 257"
'91/'92 197" 300"
'94/'95 181" 363"
'09/'10 194" 308"
'11/'12 162" 279"

Sugarbush received 156" in 15/16. Maybe someone on this board can find similar data for the SE.

I can't wait for next season!!

Note:

11/12 @ 117 then 12/13 @ 223

01/02 @ 81 then 02/03 @ 241

They were 127 this past season so ........ is the trend our friend?

So Canaan Valley was only 18% behind Sugarbush this year ?  Not bad for the 'eers.

There is almost an inverse correlation in those numbers, like if a year is bad I want it to be really bad so the next year will be really great.  Not sure I could live with that but mabye...

SkiSoutheast has annual snow totals starting in 2004 for all the resorts that they cover.  Look under Mountain Stats for the place of interest.

The shifting weather pattern makes Massanutten totals for the last couple seasons well above the 20-some inch average.  In the low 40s for last season and 2015-16.  What matters more for next season is when it gets cold enough for snowmaking and not having a heat wave in late Dec.

What's really crazy is Sugarbush's 156" was at the peak, while the base received only 70"!

Plotted data from those years against 15 yr average, and added linear trend-lines.  Bottom axis is 10-day reporting period starting 1 Dec; vert axis is snowfall (inches). Very interesting how the inverse relationship holds through the season.  Wish I had data going back further for more samples.

Ask and ye shall receive:

This link is also availble in a post from Jimmy, in a thread from 9 years ago:

Many of the links in that thread no longer work, but the one from whitegrass is still good.

Monday I skied with a friend who works at Okemo and they got 21"/base and 60-70ish/peak.

Thanks wgo, I thought there was more data hiding out there.  I'll do some crunching and re-post an update.
