It’s only October 22, and we’re still weeks ahead of our planned Dec. 10 opening, but here at Canaan Valley Resort we celebrated the first major marker of the ski season with this weekend’s dusting of snow. Last year we didn’t see snow until mid-December.
We’re taking that as a good omen that Mother Nature will be much more cooperative this coming season. And we’re also hoping that the abundance of black woolly worm caterpillars ”“ an old wives’ tale-ish sign of a harsh winter that also has some roots in meteorological science ”“ is another positive omen pointing to a banner year.
We’re not leaving it all to science and legend this year, though. With our beefed-up snowmaking and new strategies for opening popular trails, we’re doing everything we can think of to ensure that the 2016/2017 ski season will be epic. So please keep thinking cold thoughts and doing those snow dances, and we will too.
