September is the beginning of the deadly season on Mt. Washington.  100 million people live within a days drive of the mountain and most have no idea what it can throw at them.  They come for an invigorating day hike in shorts and tee shirts with maybe a cotton hoodie in their pack.  I have hiked down in early afternoon and met them on their way up when there are clouds gathering to the west and the sound of distant thunder.  They have looked at me quizzically when advised to turn back.

One of my favorite books is, "Not Without Peril", a collection of tales of those who took their chances and lost.  If you like mountains and adventure it's a must.
