Kim Williams, President of the Snow Sports Museum of West Virginia, provided info about a ski area that later became today’s Whitegrass. “Weis Knob II was opened by Bob Bartin in 1959 and closed, as close as we can determine, around 1965/66,” Williams writes.
We continue to research the WV lost areas to uncover more accurate information. Weiss Knob II was opened in 1956 by Bob Barton who moved the ski area from what is now CVR Meadows I. He planted pine trees which protect the current Meadows 1 from the wind. Weiss Knob II closed in 1968 from what we can tell. Canaan Valley did not have a ski area until the state opened CVR in 1971. The Governor's Cup Race was then held on the sled run in Blackwater Falls State Park in the interim. We are researching the history of the WV Governor's Cup Race and believe it began in 1962 however anybody who would have been old enough to remember the specifics would be in their 70s or older hence, the problems we're having in nailing down facts.
