With the recent snows, I am surprised that Canaan is not fully open like its neighbor Timberline. Anyone been there this past week? Are the trails "closed" but not really closed??

I think they're close to 100% open.  They are reporting 45 trails open, but indicate that Prosperity and Lower Prosperity are open for uphill skiing only.  Canaan's total official trail count is 47; I'm not sure if Prosperity and Lower Prosperity are the two "missing" in the total trail count.

As has been pointed out in other threads there is a ski patrol manpower problem... you may arrive at a trail with a orange line pulled across marking it is as closed, while the website indicated it is open.  You will also see plenty of ski tracks going under and around the orange line.  Draw your own conclusions.

On their website today they are only showing 26 of 47 open.

Checked and date is today. Any insights there? Could be a patrol thing.

Hmm.  Here’s a link to today’s trail report that was sent to the media: Trail report.

I’m not sure why there is a discrepancy, although the PDF was sent out at 6 am, while the web site was updated at 9:45 am. So maybe it changed after the Ski Patrol did their survey? Or there was a staffing issue? I’ll check with the resort to see if I can find out.

Thanks for planning to follow up.  Those trails (e.g., Dark Side, Gravity) matter in my decision about where to go skiing.

Thanks for following up.  Hopefully this is just for today.

I checked with the resort to get an update.  When Ski Patrol went out Friday morning, they determined that fog and rain had eaten away at some of the natural and thin-covered trails, and also determined that some of the trails were too icy for guests, so they made the decision to close some of the trails around 9:30 a.m.  The resort encourages guests to check the website for the latest conditions, as there can sometimes be a change in the trail reports after the Ski Patrol does their morning check.
