Hi -

I will be in Portsmouth, NH for a few days at the start of the new year. NE folks - any ski areas within a couple hours that are worth checking out? Pleasant Mountain looks to be the closest place.

Howdy! I used to live in Nashua, which is about an hour from Portsmouth. Since you're so close to Maine there (it's just across the bridge from Portsmouth!), I'd recommend hitting up Sunday River, which is large and tends to have excellent conditions. On the NH side, Gunstock is also pretty close. I loved going there in high school.

Thanks for the quick reply. I'll have some family obligations so Sunday River might be a bit far but Gunstock seems doable.

Thanks again!

I skied Gunstock back in the '90s.  1400' vertical.  If you catch it on a clear day there are very nice views of Lake Winnipesaukee.  Looks like Ragged Mtn, 1250' vert, is only about 15 mins further from Port, NH.  Never been, It's supposed to have nice glades.

Check the Indy Pass map and look at NH.  Depending on snow conditions, Tenney might be worth it.  Very old school vibe, old style New England trails.  Won't be a lift line.  I did a couple day trips from Boston when my daughter was in prep school there for a few years.  The new owner has put in quite a bit of money in recent years.  Talked to Tenney folks at Snowbound Expo the last two years.
