So which ski areas in the mid-atlantic have some bumps to ski?
WISP - I've skied WISP a couple of times this season, but they didn't have any bumps, just whales.
WT - Does Exhibition at WT have any bumps? I checked the webcam yesterday and I couldn't tell, but it looked like it was getting pretty narrow in spots and had some bare spots. Throw in a bunch of bumps with these natural features and it would be lots of fun.
Snowshoe and Seven Springs have no bumps. Can't image spending $80-90 on a lift ticket to ski groomers.
Liberty - Their ski reports says they have bumps, so may be I'll head up there for some turns.
Any other ski areas have any bumps?
Good question. I think I remember JimK posting a picture that showed a short section of bumps at Liberty. Let us know what you find.
Liberty's upper 2 runs have fun bumps, though a short run. Their lowere man-made bumps are OK too, though weird for me. Was just at 7 Sprgs, and there were some there. Blue Knob is your place when the expert runs are open. Whitetail will have them from here on out most likely
Pretty decent bump line was forming skier's right on Off The Wall at Timberline on Sunday. I bashed it 12 times that day. Though they were starting to lose coverage on that side due to the massive amount of rain, so hopefully they've been blowing snow on it the past day or so.
Seems to vary by year, snow, rain, etc.... Whitetail used to bump up on side of expedition if I remember right. Timberline usually bumps bottom half of OTW, but often the whales at top and bumps are often just ice. I am jealous of people who shred this one when icy and will often stop and watch here, but I need a little powder to really be comfortable. Silver streak/White lightning can be fun when there is enough snow. Elk has bumped up top of lacawanna. When I was at snowshoe before Xmas, Crocker was a little bumped up at top first day after snow at top under chairlift, but as temps rose it went away. Btw, as a wannabe bump skier I was popping down this one and heard someone yell great line from the lift, my head is still swollen. Gore had a couple bumped runs last time I was there. I think the best one was double barrel. If I remember the trails right. But it had a steep bumped drop that was clear trail, albeit narrow, but you had to ski out through trees. This was where I realized my son had caught up or passed me on his snowboard :). Ithese are my usuall suspects.
I think the OP was asking what is currently out there that is bumped up...but as long as we are on the subject Massanutten lets the skier's left side of Paradice bump up during decent snow years. Makes for a pretty long bump run, especially by mid-Atlantic standards.
wgo wrote:

Only one cup of coffee do far....
Better view of Exhibition now on Whitetail's web cam (sun is out.) Mini-bumps (with a lot of the crappy spines that tend to form on it.) Should get bigger with more skier traffic today/tomorrow.
When Upper MAKAttack is open at Mnut, it's not groomed. Definitely ends up with big bumps but it's very short . . . 10 turns max. They get shaped by boarders more than skiers, so not exactly round. A bit more of a challenge to ski it under the lights. Has value for learning to deal with bumps, but not a reason for spending a day at Mnut if the other blacks and things to do at Mnut are not of interest.
When I get a private during a Silver Clinic, Walter uses MAKAttack to demonstrate stuff.
I hear the Dr will give you lotion for that.
Seven Springs has a dedicted bump run, Goose Bumps, skiers far right on the front face. They will groom on occasion but not very often. The best bumps are found on skiers left of Stowe, also on the front. This maybe groomed more often but usually you can find bumps there. There are pockets of bumps that are found on the slopes that have natural cover, skiers rfar left from the top of North Face. Skiers left of Giant Steps about midway down. Pop out of the evergreens that line Boulder trail near the bottom to ski bumps on the last face down to the Tahoe quad chair. All in all Goose Bumps and Stowe will be your beat bet because of snow making. All terrain at 7S is intermedite pitch, as you know.
At Blue Knob, Extovert will bump up but it could be snow whales like OTW at T-line. There is often a bump line left to grow on Deer Run, skier's right. All natural snow trails will bump up with perhaps Edgeset being the exception as that does get groomed. East Wall "Glade" will bump up and if the cover is marginal you will also have to contend with rock ledges and maybe a stump or two for your expert skiing challenge.
Whe I made the orignal post, none of the mid-atlantic areas had any bumps. I know 7Springs has a lot of bumps runs, but when I checked Stowe and Goose Bumps had been groomed. :(
I ended up getting my fix at Liberty. It was very satisfying, felt like I needed to smoke a Camel when I was done. :)
May not exactly be considered Mid-Atlantic, but the two bumps runs at Elk were pretty interesting to look at. Too cold today to stay long enough for me give them a try. Never got much above 8 degrees. Plus we only had time to ski in the morning.

What happens on the slopes, stay on the slopes....
Skied the drop @ t-line all Saturday afternoon. A little thin in spots but was the best snow on the mountain. Did venture to OTW and it was bumping up nicely. Should both be good by thei weekend with more snowmaking and some natural thrown in.
The bumps on Whitetail's Exhibition were "ok" last weekend. There were a few nice lines, but there were also some issues. On 1/7 WT closed Exhibition for concentrated snowmaking. They blasted it. It looks filled in and soft on the web cams today. The snow report says groomed. Right now, if there are any bumps they are very small. They are still making snow on Exhibition today. It should be bumped back up nicely by this weekend.

I stopped in to check out Whitetail for the first time yesterday. Plenty of snowmaking on Exhibition building up the piles. That was before any grooming so looked like a bump run. Also snowmaking on the double-black, which was open. Temp was 4 degrees when I arrived at 11:30am and went up to 9 in the next couple hours.
The bumps at Whitetail were still pretty small this past weekend.
Liberty has three well bumped up runs at the moment, Upper Strata with really big bumps, and Upper and Lower Eastwind with medium sized bumps. The best lines are on the two upper trails as they are expert trails, It is a bit harder to find a good line on Lower Eastwind, since less skilled skiers go down that run.
MephitBlue wrote:

All 3 of these runs were really fun yesterday. I'm finding I'm having a lot more fun at Liberty this season than Whitetail
Here is a link to Adam Klein skiing the Bumps on Off the Wall on Sunday at T-Line. The run was a sheet of ice and to get down it with going on a death slide was an accomplishment:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMPW-vtJUpQ
PS - If you friend Dave Miller on Nords of Timberline you will see lots of photos ect from TLine.
Well done!
As I get older I am getting lazier and less interested in bumps. Now I usually parallel them; in fact I usually parallel everything if the surface is firm. I save the tele for soft snow, where it just feels much better than the parallel.
A wise choice. No doubt Tele is a much better tool for soft snow. Adam is still a youngster so his legs can take it. The bumps on OTHW were really fun on Saturday (if you don't mind hard rain) but ungodly on Sunday when it froze which is why I stayed away from that run myself.

While Whitetail has the vertical, I find that I enjoy skiing at Liberty more than Whitetail myself. Both places have their pluses and minuses, but Liberty feels like it has more variety in its runs. Whitetail's expert runs feel different from each other, but their intermediate runs feel pretty much the same to me.
I haven't been on here in a couple of years and while lurking I saw this ... it's great to see a bump thread! Me and a couple of my buddies are long time avid bump skiers and in the past have chased bumps at all three of the Snowtime resorts, but as mentioned above, Liberty seems to be the best bet the in the past couple of years.
Does anyone know how Roundtop is looking? Their report show a few runs bumped up, but it has been my experience that the bumps at RT have taken a major decline in quality since Big Daddy left, so we don't make the additional drive there anymore. It would be great to hear that RT has something going, so that way when Lib gets skied out or WT isn't rocking yet, RT is an option. Until a couple fo years ago, RT was by far the best bump mountain of the three... man I miss those days.
MakAttack at Massanutten is getting interesting at this point. On Saturday, the snow was softest there since it's never groomed. The other slopes were scraped down to an ice layer in places.

I might try it his weekend for a quick fix. Been several years since I have been there.

I was there on Friday afternoon. The ungroomed state on MakAttack provided some challenge and was a nice change of pace from the rest of the mountain, but I wouldn't say it was skiing as a normal bump run - at least, I couldn't really find a way through that allowed for some rhythm. And it really is a short section that is ungroomed...still fun though.

CJ68,
Glad I could draw you out of the shadows, you are probably the only poster here on DCski that likes to ski bumps as much as I do. In fact, if theres no powder, tree skiing, or bumps, I'd prefer to snowboard. Why, because groomers are dangerous!

Yeah, MakAttack is too short and there are too many boarders for it to become a bump run that allows rhythm like Exhibition at Whitetail. Haven't been to Tline yet, so I can't compare to anything there. What MakAttack provides is a place for advanced skiers to challenge themselves. Following instructors (Level 2 or 3) on MakAttack is not easy as they smoothly go across, up and down, and generally ski as if the bumps/mounds aren't there.
Mnut got 2-3 inches of natural snow last night. With the cold weather today and Sun night, should be a great holiday weekend in terms of snow conditions. I'm heading out west tomorrow or I'd be at Mnut now.

Took too long to catch up from my last business trip last week and I have to work today, so can't sneak out anyway :(.
nice bumps forming on goosebumps at 7s. Recent snow of about 8" would put you optimal to hit them from tomorrow onto the next week!
Massanutten's Dixie dare is bumped up. They were pretty icy though. One through literally had chunks of ice laying in it about 10x10 inches. I ran them a few times, getting faster each time but lost it and spun around backward on some ice and had a ski come off. So decided I was pushing my luck and went and played elsewhere :).
Where is Mac attack? I have been to Massanutten many times, although not recently, and can't recall anything by that name. I didn't see it in an online map either.

It is the run formerly known as Dixie Dare.
Timberline had bumps today. Just ask JohnL, Scott, or Jimmy...
Good thread... Had an NSP clinic at Montage yesterday. First time visitor. Was able to grab about an hour of free skiing at the end of the day with some other attendees led by one of their red coats... Gotta say, Montage has some bumps. If never been, the blacks are all on the bottom, with a mid mountain lodge. White Lightning and Smoke in particular had some huge bumps with backside verticals I don't think I've ever seen in the region: imagine Upper Extrovert but with twice the width to broaden the bumps and the drops. A chair at the bottom to take you back up. Perhaps 600' vert but makes for quick laps.
Living in DC area, I've always thought Elk is overlooked and easily the best hill in PA. With Montage as an easy stop over on the way back (or up), it's an even better trip. Go north! Interstate the whole way. Duh. Montage further has a sweet looking bar - a return drive and long day already preventing my test. ..I'll be back.
Makattac, or slope formally know as Dixie dare, at the 'nut was pretty good today. The sun soften the bumps to make them very skiable. My legs were burnt from a hard workout yesterday, but still couldn't resist a few runs down them. I found my best line starting out right and moving to center at bottom. Center left at top wasn't bad, but a little too irregular for my turn rhythm. I left early to make it back for a Super Bowl party. At least the food was good!
Bumps, maybe I saw you there. Moguls on MakAttack were good today. I thought that the snow on the whole mountain was really nice - great spring conditions!

I was there from about 9-2. Dragged a buddy with me who hadn't made turns in about 10 years. He had blast and has the bug again, so it was a good day all around.
Exhibition at Whitetail offered some interesting bump skiing yesterday, with about 4 inches of heavy snow on all the moguls.
Massanutten is really surprising me this year. Snuck down again today and on first run was cursing down paradise on left side, not paying attention and found myself in the middle of a mogul run. It wasn't there last week and I went through three or 4 bumps before I figured it out :). MakAttack was fun again and tried to get a shot of it.
Yeah, they do let skiers left of paradise bump up some years. Good to hear this is one of those years.
wgo wrote:

A bit different for Paradice this time. Instead of just not grooming, the bumps were actually carved out on the lower section of Paradice. I didn't notice them until the third time down this morning since the upper section is completely groomed. Especially since the whales are all over so playing on the contours is fun. Snow was very nice today.
Spent most of the Silver Clinic on MakAttack. Learned how to pivot on the "ridge."

marzNC, what time were you doing it? I didn't get down there until around 1130. I spent first hour or two on paradice side, before moving over to MakAttack. I saw a group of ski patrol folks practicing on MakAttack, but that was about it. A couple were struggling a bit. Yeah the Paradice bumps were probably about a foot and half to two feet sized bumps. They were actually well spaced and you could zipper them (or as close as I can get to zippering them :) )

The Silver Clinic is 1:00-3:00 on Sundays and Thursdays. I skied off Lift 5 and 6 from about 9:30-12:00, then went in for lunch.
If you saw my clinic "group" you might not have thought it was a public lesson. Walter asked me if it was okay to include a few instructors who are Level 2 candidates. He knows I enjoy watching him work with others. I learn a lot that I wouldn't learn otherwise. I was the one in a blue jacket. Have to say I had a good time as he taught them and me because I was better than they were on bumps, and with technique in general. Mostly because I've been skiing a fair amount out west in recent years, learning from Walter, plus just finished a week up in the Adirondacks. Had a bump lesson at JH a few weeks ago from a Level III instructor. First one ever. Between that and what Walter showed me, handling MakAttack in one go is now a possibility. That was not the case last season.
May be hard to see, but here are the bumps on MakAttack and Paradice from Feb. 9. Be interesting to see what they are like on Friday. I'm going back for the long weekend.
Not exactly Mid-A, but Plattekill in central NY (northeast of Binghamton) definitely has bumps. There are several trails that are not groomed, or only have one side groomed. Total vertical is about the same as Mnut, about 1100 ft, but the runs are top-to-bottom with very little run out at the bottom. Quite fun after a storm. Usually only open Fri-Sun, or a day after at least one foot of snow.
I was there on Friday, two days after a snowstorm that dropped 6-8 inches. Stayed cold afterwards so although there wasn't untracked, there was plenty of soft snow. If you look closely at the first photo, there is a skier towards the bottom of the run.
Oh yeah . . . there are skiable trees too. Some areas are even named and have signs inviting people to drop in. It was worth a little detour on my way south from Lake Placid.

Glad to hear that Paradise is has the bumps again along the left side. Over the MLK weekend, I skied the hell out of upper Mak, as it was pretty nice over that weekend.
I'll be at the 'Nut this weekend myself. Seems that there may even be a bit of snow on Sunday and hopefully this weather that is supposed to come through Wednesday night/Thursday morning will add some freshies up there as well.
At Whitetail this past weekend, on the lift that goes over the longer green runs and over the beginner terrain park there was a 100 yard section that they let bump up. It was obviously left on purpose, it was about 100 yards long and 40 feet wide. They were great bumps for beginners to try out, my 10 year old and 7 year old went back for them run after run, and now they're psyched to watch the mogul events in the Olympics. I think it's great for Whitetail to do this, it's a skill that is great to learn but you can't learn it well trying to make it down a black diamond that has VW size moguls! Although the moguls were small enough that the kids basically bombed down them, catching a little air on the last few :)
Massanutten's snow report is saying that everything was groomed. No mo bumps?
Any bumps at Wintergreen?

MarzNC reports bumps at M'Nut as of Feb 9. The report stating that everything was groomed has been that way since a couple days before that...not sure what is going on.
Typo on the Nut snow report. Bumps on Upper Mak Attack are still there and growing. Line also forming on middle third of Paradice that will grow and extend with the new snow.

Well, most of Paradice was groomed, but I'm pretty sure the intention is to leave the section of bumps that were put in on purpose. One reason might be that Mnut is hosting PSIA-E clinics and exams on Feb. 27-28. The bump section is very much on the side, so doesn't really impact people who want to stick with a groomed surface. Note that there are lots of contours on Paradice at this point. Not a "flat" trail at all.

Thanks for the update!
We plan on letting the left side of Paradice bump up pretty much top to bottom. The pitch on Upper Mak Attack hasn't seen a groomer all year. Also made snow on both last night. Upper Mak was skiing exceptionally well this afternoon!

I think I did see you while riding up lift, if instructors were in red coats. I vaguely remember someone in blue pulling up on left side to watch the others go down on the lower bump section. I picked up a value pass and have been going down most Sundays. Unfortunately I have other commitments and will miss out this weekend when it looks like we will have best snow in a while :(.

Yep, instructors were in red jackets.
If I weren't set to drive up on Friday with friends, I'd be very tempted to drive up Wed morning before the snow in NC starts. Driving won't be a problem on Friday, but I have a feeling I'll miss the best snow by the time we get up to Mnut.

Bumpfest Friday at M'Nut. MakAttack skied great. Bumps on lower part of paradice really nice, and bumps forming higher up as well. Fun dealing with the loose piles of snow in the proto-mogul section and then transitioning into the more defined section.

Only had a chance to do one run on Paradice today. Definitely all sorts of bumps, big and small, to play with. I'm with friends who are beginners, but hoping to spend a litte time on Lift 6 tomorrow.
Although it was raining in the valley this morning, it was all snow on the slopes. The cold front blew in midday. Should be pretty good conditions on Sunday.
7springs got 18" over the past 3 days and mogles were everywhere in the evening! Any steep slope would have them
T-Line had bumps rocking on The Drop, Off the Wall, Upper Thunder Draft (under the lift) and even the natural snow Lower White Lightning (which given it's short length and tame pitch, scads of intermediates were hitting it all weekend.) Plus with all the new snow and skier traffic on Saturday, there were bumps everywhere by the end of the day. They were groomed out on Sunday.
Did another Silver Clinic with Walter at Massanutten today. We spent most of the time on the bump line on Paradice. They were soft but not slushy, perfect for learning better technique for having fun "flowing" over bumps.
Got out for a few runs at M'Nut on friday afternoon with wgo jr. Pretty much the entire left side of paradice is bumped up now. Icy in the troughs (especially on the lower part on the run) but still fun.

I forgot you said it went almost to top. I again was jamming down mountain, but did see the bumps at last minute this time and was able to slow up before I was in them :). Fun day today until it started pouring! Bumps were soft and slushy.
Rain was a bummer but hopefully tomorrow will be a net gain. I'm sure we'll leave some leftovers somewhere.
7Springs rebuilt moguls last night on Stowe and Alpine Meadow.... with the warmer weather coming in they should be pretty sweet!

Bumps at Mnut on Paradice are most definitely still there. Got pretty soft today. Not too many people skiing them so should stay for a bit longer.

I was there as well. I played some in bumps, but my legs were burned from a Saturday workout and just couldn't hold a good line so bailed out mostly. A.few of the troughs were getting very thin, but overall were fun. so then of course avoiding the bumps I fell for first time this year just skiing through the heavy snow. I caught a little air came down and planted my skis to turn and they just slowed down but my body kept moving down hill. I got my balance out if wack and Ski would not turn snd just popped right out. Pulled my ankle a little but no real damage done, still good for mammoth! The expert lift was empty, I just kept going up and down until I could hardly standup.
Reminder: Quit while you are ahead! When legs are tired, stop and rest for awhile or for the day, especially when sking heavy spring snow! Glad you were not seriously injured.
I saw JimK from the lift tearing it up on the bumps on Exhibition at Whitetail Sunday afternoon!!
I did two runs myself but go spooked when I saw a guy who had been doing really well go down and need a toboggen. I stayed on Bold Decision and Far Side after that!
No Steve - it was more like the bumps were tearing me up. Sorry I couldn't stop and ski a few runs with you. My daughters were waiting for me back at the lodge. I wonder how much longer the SnowTime resorts will stay open? I know it's weather dependent, but they still have a lot of snow. It would be something special if their season lasted from late Nov to early April!
Timberline's got bumps! Working on some video from Saturday. When post when I get a chance to finish it.
The bumps under the chair @ t-line were the best in several years. Soft corn. Wish they would let Almost Heaven bump up like it did last year.

Any chance there's some video of you getting up close and personal with the Valley surface conditions on your last run? :)

Sure is. Be sure to watch until the end.
Great times and great Bumps on Saturday! Conditions were so good I occasionally felt like I was making decent turns in the bumps, which is a foreign feeling to me.
Here's Scott/SCWVA (mostly) and Jimmy having fun on Saturday. Great times!!
Thanks for posting, David. Hoping to get out to TL for closing weekend.
