lots of chatter out there for mid Dec on but I have heard that song and dance too many times before...
Anyhoot...im sure this thread will get some play almost soon enough...we really cant see much more than 10 days in advance and even that is fuzzy...
liittle bit of action up in that NEK/Wildcat/Sugarloaf area. Otherwise go west as fast as you can.

Probably flat!! Brrrrrrrrrrrr!
yeh its flat but that low temperature is fueled by the massive snowcover over on that side of the world...
if we can get a chunk of that sweetness to migrate south and over our Great Lakes and up into our Alpps..............
.................then.......SLAMAGE!!
Last year I posted this photo ......
I had to cut my grass again on Sunday...........

Yeh..I had to cut down on my grass too...Is that just something you do on Sunday Jimmy?
funny thing about this fish, I wasn't sure but i checked it out and yes, no, instead of cutting my grass I usually ski at Seven Springs on the first Sunday December. I am happy to add that on the second Sunday in December I will NOT be cutting grass..............
Skied Alta this past Sunday. Good but thin. Most of the good stuff was still closed, and what was open was crusty. Storms have bypassed Utah so far this season, although I hear that may change this weekend. Wish I could have stayed!

Working 60 hours a week doesn't give me much time to post. Waiting for some meat in this thread. I'm thinking of returning to the Outer Banks for another fishing trip. Still remember that 35 lb Mahi I caught a few years ago in rough seas. Took me 35 minutes to get it on the boat. Palm trees are sprouting here in the mountains, so I'm trading my skis for a fishing rod. Ski boots for flip-flops.
Give me some good weather news. I have to get back to work. Oh...the polar ice cap just floated by.... Got to go.
not an only child...Just the only one that matters...u forgot to add Narcissist Mr. Smith!....polar ice cap floating by...u made a funny..ha ha....
Love the outer banks but dont love the rough atlantic...I love the relaxation of surf fishing and pier fishing...Im getting spoiled boating down here in the gulf of Florida because it lays flat alot...when I head back to the Carolinas in late april it gets back to tricky boating...u should see the rollers I have to navigate thru going out of the inlets!
Dont u go away Colonel sir...just go go go and keep gettin it!
Yeah, tough to get too excited when all the forecasts are for lame warm weather. Until now! Let's do it, winter!
A long run for the dog to chase, but go for it!
Bow wow wow...yipee yo yippee yay....got a dog closer to home puttin a little wag on!
with the really warm lakes somebody is going to get a serious dump with the cold shot coming in....The highest elevations of WV have to overcome a warm ground but should get a few inches and it will look a lot like Xmas.!...untill XMas...when it wont....(hound dog bawling sad face)

I'll be at the Shoe this weekend too. Let's hope for the best
I would kill to be at Steamboat right now. They have been getting clobbered.
I dont feel that this should get into the snow Hound thread but with the snow drought here it is.... the Wv Alpps should get a few inches starting this aft...should get a sniff of Lake Huron and Erie if ur up there...we get alot of lake effect from lake michigan but this cold shot is sending the michigan moisture to NC...they might get an inch.
The models are shifting and flipping but seem to all agree that there could be some really cold air coming soon and what if we could get a nice storm to spin up on that stuff?....stay tuned!....and waxed....
Yes mr fishnski, a few inches of fluffy lake-flake this morning is keeping the hope alive for this real "snowhound" and feels like it should be this time a year.... Now tell us about the storm next monday<?> people are starting to talk about..................
Thats the dog that was in the front seat of the car that came fishtailin into the CV Stores parking lot nearly sideswiping me while I was stealing WiFi from the fire dept last winter!
Yeh Chaga mon...been looking at that storm potential for 4 or so days now...doesnt seem to want to line up right and it wants to scoot thru pretty fast so im not too excited yet...like i posted earlier ...there is some nice cold shots dropping down with the potential to spin up a storm on any given front...either way we at least get some LE or just plain ole cold snowmaking Wx...
U go speed racer!!

WV mountains seem to be getting decent snow. I checked TL, SS and CVs webcams and all showed a steady heavy to moderate snow from I could tell.
4PM: Moderate snow and 20F. 1.3 in of new snow past three hours, most of which fell in past hour. Cold front passed, wind sharply increased, temp starting down. Near zero visibility in heavy snow and blowing snow at times past hour.

I skiied there Dec 20 and was impressed by what they could do. However, it does look like they are taking their time now that a few trails are open. Canaan is easily the least opened ski resort in the area at this time. Not enough snow guns and snow making capacity? I am not sure how that's going to help them for MLK weekend. People from Metro DC will have plenty better options than Canaan right now. Perhaps no skier crowd is the only advantage.

everything has panned out so far....we are now getting brushed with the 17th storm..(.the 22nd??.).....almost every run has placed this storm in different set ups ...seems this el nino pattern has made it harder for the models to nail the fcasts down pat...I cant remember such inconsistency from run to run....but here is a bullish run from the Euro...
The latest Euro run even gets more bullish....keep in mind that this is a 10 day total so subtract the say 6 inches from what we got today/tonite and whats coming in with a little system before this main storm for the 22/23rd...
The GPS is showing about 7 inches less than the euro...a little more south and east with the storm...DC could get snockered...
its evolving....stay tuned!
I just drove through that storm. White-out horizontal snow conditions on 33 about 5-10 miles west of Elkins. Fresh tracks at night! It snowed on & off all day at Snowshoe but totaled an inch or so. Was cranking up as I left at 6pm.
glad ya made it back safe Bonzski....Im not even going to post the latest Snow model fcast because it is getting freaky....some seriously stupid snow!
The amounts that they are showing if panned out would be as shocking as the snow that just fell in Saudi Arabia....I would be as shocked as this Camel herdsman!......but hey...bring it on!
I have to be in DC on Wed&Thurs and hoping to get back home Thurs evening and then leave the office early enough Friday to not get caught up in the snowmageddon.

Fish - what do you see as timing on this event. I may sneak in a trip to SS if mission control gives me the green light
Man, I have to fly to NYC tomorrow morning, and am coming back Thursday night. A couple of thoughts:
1. I hope this storm doesn't impact my 9:30 flight Thursday night.
2. Do people think if I get up first thing Friday and leave for Snowshoe (let's say leave DC at 7am), I can beat the storm? Will be in an SUV with AWD. I'd leave earlier than that, but I won't get home from my business trip until probably midnight the night before, so want to get at least a little rest. Maybe I could move it up to a 6am departure.

Alright, newbie here on the forums, but I've been skiing around here for 3 seasons now. I'm a season pass holder at blue knob and will be headed up there Thursday night. Looking for a cheap place to stay. Any recommendations or anyone want to split lodging costs? In the past we've stayed at a condo we found on airbnb or at a hotel, but I'm hoping to save some money this weekend...
Also would love to get some AT turns this weekend... Any locals know the chances of Laurel Mountain being skiable after Saturday? I'm located in Maryland, so I'm more into PA than VA...
The NWS has come around with "heavy snow" predicted Davis from Firday morning until Late Saturday. Have fun yall.
I will be in Memphis, and not enough snow or hills there, so meanwhile, that Saudi snow was interesting enough to follow up From the Weather Channel...
Snow fell right across the Middle East last week as a powerful winter storm swept through the region, with snow falling as far south as northern Saudi Arabia.
Temperatures reached sub-zero in the desert surrounding area forcing the Bedouin shepherds, and their camels, to shelter inside their tents to protect them from the freezing temperatures and the snow storm.
It has snowed three years running in the region but this storm was seen as being particularly intense.
Two people were killed and several were injured due to road accidents caused by the snow and police closed main roads in the area.
Temperatures have now returned to more typical values across the region, but the snow stayed long enough for the shepherds to build a snow man.

All this snow is nice but we're in wv not Utah so I'm not hopeing for to much, But what is the base in the valley at places like whitegrass and tline? My guess... I'm going 28 feeling good about this storm.
I'll be happy with 12" but I'm guestimating 20". I'm not confident the resorts and surrounding businesses are capable with appropriate manpower/staff to handle some of those extreme numbers.

Those that are in shape will get plenty of first tracks if the resorts can't open...
My guess? I'm saying Chip will have about 30" at the 4,300 ft stake by the end of the storm.
This is storm is looking huge! How do you think this will compare to Snowmageadon in 2010? I think 7spring got over 2 feet that time. It was rediculous.
I have been following this one since sunday.

Laurel Mountain State Park is closed to the public. The ski area infrastructure is being rebuilt to the tune of $5 million. There is heavy earth moving and construction equipment throughout the mountain's trails. Crews were busy right up to this latest freeze and will no doubt continue to work until they can no longer do so. Construction crews and state park personnel are on premises and the park is officially closed, for real. There are real liability issues at stake and those who choose to ignore the closure and are caught will not be treated with much leniency.
Map of construction:
The XC trails on the ridge in the State Forest land bordering the park will be open to public use. Check this web site for web cam view of snow accumulation at the top of the ridge across from the XC patrol and visitors' building:

I suspect that's going to be too late, but we'll see. For sure, you don't want to be on any interstate during a storm like this. No 4WD will help you get around the jackknifed and stuck semis. During the big Dec '10 storm, the national guard was rescuing people off I-81 in Rockbridge County and putting them into local schools because the stuck semis closed down the interstate, and no one could get around them front or back. Bad situation.
It'll be little better on the little WV roads. The steep bits will quickly clog with folks in FWD Honda Civics trying to up hills. Or people in 4WD pickups on bald tires.
At least this is my experience around these parts during bad snowstorms. If we were in Vermont, I'd say go. Not so much around here.
25" by Sat night at Wisp, WV, maybe NC too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1dGUQDU5E9g&feature=youtu.be

A solid frozen 4"-5" at White Grass that should not melt before the next round
I'm in town through Friday night. My decision will be based on road conditions on Saturday. More than likely I'll be in the Laurel Highlands. Probably go to Seven Springs Saturday and look for left overs at Hidden Valley Sunday. I'd like to get to T-line or Blue Knob but I'm not going to risk bad drivers to get there.

I am very happy for all of you who will get to enjoy all the snow from this storm. I am going to be skiing at SS from Feb 17 - 20. Any wisdom on what I can expect then? It looks like it will warm up a bit in about 10 days, but I hope that changes.
Heading back to Massanutten from NC on Thursday morning. Found a way to keep using the condo I had for the holiday weekend through Sat night. Advantage this time compared to Feb 2010 is that I'll be close enough to walk to the ski lodge if I don't feel like digging out the car on Sat morning.

The Canaan valley would make a lot better use of 2 feet of snow than Richmond or Baltimore can

However, having fraternity brothers with cars who are willing to drag people through the streets works out pretty decent for a quick skiing blast.

You may want to keep an eye on the forecast. Ice is something we should all avoid.
My phone app is predciting 3-6 inches on Thursday for Snowshoe and a couple more on Friday.
However, other sites were predicting only 2 inches.
Anyone got any insight? Trying to decide if i will drive up wednesday night and stay in Elkins that night (and work from there Thursday), then drive the rest to SS on Thursday afternoon. OR - just leave Thursday night. Really depends on the snow. Was also thinking of renting a SUV or buying snow chains even for my VW Jetta.
I drove back and forth to SS from that motel in Mill Creek on 219 during the huge storm Jonas WITHOUT issue.
Not sure how a jetta does in the snow VS my 4WD truck. WVDOT did a great job on the roads. Maybe chains are a good idea as you'll have them for years just in case. I think you'd be wasting $$ on renting an SUV.
There's really only 2 big hills coming from Elkins. The one going up leaving Randolph Co into Pocahontas Co and then Snowshoe Drive itself.
Blue Don 1982 wrote:
I think you're right. Good to know on the Hills. I'm perfectly capable in the snow, but yea my Jetta won't even be close to as good as your truck. My first drive to Snowshoe was harrowing. My 2nd drive was better, but that's because I left early so the snow didn't hit for awhile. Either way, it's mostly the back roads that get to me. Not anyone out there to help, etc. And it was mostly before SS drive that got me nervous. Makes me wanna go out and get a used Subaru :D Snow chains ordered with really quick delivery. Hoping they are here before I want to head out on Wednesday. Woudl like to leave Elkins before the snow hits, but I still need to get a decent amount of work done on Thursday from my virtual office :D. Is there any public place at SS with actually fast internet? I doubt my condo will have it :-/I drove back and forth to SS from that motel in Mill Creek on 219 during the huge storm Jonas WITHOUT issue.

Starbucks in village. Also, SS used to have a WiFi room below the Depot...not sure if it's still setup. It's a crap shoot whether any are "fast" internet...especially on weekends.
Also lobby in Allegheny Springs. Maybe in Shavers Center or Big Top? What condo are you staying in? Also should work in Village and some other places with an ATT connected hotspot.

That would be great! We lucked out with a powder day during our family ski weekend the first weekend in March last year at Blue Knob, hoping for a repeat this year at Wisp.
ATM the storm track to me looks too far south for a big one...that could change of course since we are still a week away but we (western front highcountry(Alpps) will be brushed with some snow mon morn....then a rain tue nite to snow wed event..then we could start to see the overrunning moisture from the system posted about starting thur aft...
I just got back from a month in Canaan and was really pleased with the amount of snow we got so Im just watching now...
BTW....I have the pleasure..and frusterated ,sad ..with such a waste feeling..of observing Mount Porte Crayon from my home up at the Valley of the Alpps (3 min south of canaan thru the 2 cut in the rocks...lower valley bigger mountains)...
MPC is Snow joke!..I always know it will snow at my place when even though the snow is moving in from the west and MPC is to my east because it starts to snow there first....and then backs back to me....it is always the first and last place for the snow to start and end....many days It will be sunny at my place and i can look up to my left and see the backside of canaan ski area and the top of Weiss knob where there might be a few broken clouds hanging around but i look to my front and MPC is socked in.
I observe snow sweeping from right to left from MPC thru the roaring plains resembling the showers you can see from thunderstorms as they move in...even when its not snowing up in the Canaan valley tops....MPC and the largest plateau of the roaring plains create their own weather...and can retain the snow with alot of snow/cloud shadow efects....
this mtn is the real deal and gives this snow Hound alot of mixed emotions as I enjoy the changing clouds and Wx scenes that keep that mtn so interesting to watch...
Hi Fishnski!
First, thanks so much for your contributions to this thread!
Can you help out us layman and spell out your latest predictions in basic terms? I read your posts above, and am trying to understand exactly which two systems you're talking about. It sounds like there was supposed to be some snow yesterday morning, but Snowshoe didn't report any.
Then we're talking about rain tonight, turning to snow tomorrow? Then, what, a break, followed by a snow event Thursday night and into Friday?
I'm headed up to Snowshoe Thursday afternoon, so I'm specifically thinking about how this will impact my drive, and then skiing on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Thanks!!!
I posted this a couple of days ago in response to Blue Don talking about the internet chatter for a storm Fri...

The early mon morning snow ended up being some light snow up at 4000' and above...I saw it on the SS cam.
then we have the backside of a rain event tue nite turning to snow wed morn with a cold front...WINDY...couple of inches with that and will end later on that day...then as I mentioned above..we will start to see some snow sometime late thur into fri with the talked about storm that i felt was heading to far south to do to much damage..4" or so event ending by fri eve...then saturday aft and into sun morn a light clipper will lay down the last few inches........then its Spring!

Looks like you picked a good one...maybe the last good one!...dont see anything to worry about on your drive up there thur aft..nothing you couldnt handle being a seasoned Mountaineer.....maybe wed morn would be tricky with the windy front...
looking sweet and ill be with ya in spirit..have a good one!....and one last thing...
wear a helmet!...My wife fell and hit her head XC skiing and then a couple of days later I cracked my head HARD ice skating at Canaan...kids were crying...folks were saying they heard the thud from the parking lot....paramedics were called to fix my cut and look me over....why would I wear a helmet Alpine skiing but not XC or Ice skating....not anymore....helmet on no matter what!!
Head to Mexico for the snow hound chase.....any ski areas there?.......
Then you jet setting money hounds should head north to the sierras for some Deep stuff!
In mexico you have to climb for it. Mexico's big volcanoes are bucket list material for ski mountaineers.
LATEST NWS METS DISCUSSION "LONG TERM /THURSDAY NIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/... THE WARM SPRING WX OF RECENT WILL GRADUALLY TRANSITION BACK TO A COOL SEASON SYNOPTIC PATTERN. THIS WILL BE CHARACTERIZED BY THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A MEAN LONGWAVE TROF OVER THE EASTERN US BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND...WITH QUIET WX GENERALLY THRU FRIDAY OR SATURDAY....... THIS PATTERN CHANGE MAY BE USHERED IN BY A EASTERN STORM SYSTEM WHICH WILL HAVE TO BE MONITORED FOR PERHAPS SOME MOUNTAIN SNOW ON SUNDAY.....WITH CHILLY RAIN ELSEWHERE." Storm placement and how and if it will evolve is doing the normal song and dance on the latest Wx Model runs....my winter is over but I was just trying to find something for the diehards....long live the Diehards.....Great luck!
Hmmm. Maybe snowshoe on 3/21 if this pans out...any chance this ends up being more than a couple inches of wet snow?

IF...the storm can set up just right it could be a whole lot of wet snow sunday turning to the colder lighter stuff sunday nite into monday morning....that would be the best outcome....
other outcomes would be the storm comes in too tight (close to the Mtns) not alowing the cold air to get in till it moves off with the wrap around....or it scoots off a little too far east of the Mtn's which leaves enough cold for all snow but not enough moisture to do too much damage....Or the Models could have got spooked and they started to ghost bust..and the storm busts...
same Issues we have with every coastal storm that has ever come up the East Coast...like I said..."Its the same ole song and Dance".......
I just wanted to hound out the potential....

Wow...thats Lame....oh well...they had a rough season...Ok...Whitegrass...come back kids?..
the 3 main afternoon models are in...actually this mornings Data that comes out in the afternoon....
Play by Play...
The American GFS sniffed out a storm saturday nite...our Canadien buddies followed up with a storm sunday...both good tracks for a hefty snow in the WV Alpps...the new and Improved and upgraded Euro still had a storm heading up and out west of the alpps..(rain to upslope snow) at that time...
at 2.44am mon the Euro came on board with the coastal low...
now this aft we have the Canadien coming up too close to the mtns with warmer air (but with colder air and some snow with the wrap around)...the American model coming up a little too far off the coast ,so cold enough air but not close enough to tap into the main moisture available....
The latest Euro seems to want to split the uprights......
This is just my Amatureish non educated take on this using free Weather sites available to the public....please do your own due diligence and proceed with any plans at your own risks......
any more educated thoughts on this potential storm would be most welcome but my experience is that everybody just waits for the next Model run which is why I have been doing this myself for years now....folks like DT at Wxrisk is just a BS artist......

Is the new model run out? :-) Hoping for a blockbuster!
To make a long story short...Coastal Low is trending further offshore....
Weather underground calling for 1-3 inches at both snowshow and davis on Sunday...still considering a Monday trip.
The snow hounds thread ....I mean shred, canaan corn still...on brand new G3 Stinger XCD's. They climb like billy goats, super light and turn like a charm.
It's a private Idaho out here, and we are happy skiers still!
Unless we get a few inches or more, the skiing won't be so good this weekend when it gets colder because it will be crusty gnarly till it warms back up. Today will be spectacular, and maaaaybee tomorrow based on if the sun hits it at all. There is your public corn report announcement.
Joe Bastardi and Weatherbell pointing out good chance for a substantial heavy (10"+-) wet snow in Northern Virginia late this weekend! NWS in Charleston WV calling for snow at Snowsoe all weekend! Weather models appear to be coming into agreement on this east coast event!! Keep your fingers crossed!!!

General: A cold and snowy 3 days beginning Saturday and lasting through Monday is in the cards for the Canaan and surrounding high country above 3,000 feet elevation. Much colder air filters in and an unsettled weather pattern develops. Temperatures will hover from upper teens to near freezing during most of the period. A coastal storm may develop with the usual uncertainties in development location, track, and rate of intensification adding uncertainty to snowfall amounts.
While my Fearless Forecast is calling for much colder and snowier conditions that publicly available forecasts (rain and snow mixed, 40's F and little or no snow accumulation), I, as always, advise you to stay tuned to your National Weather Service public forecasts for updates and winter weather advisories.
Specifics:
Saturday: Cloudy and colder with snow developing in the morning. Lows in the upper 20's will only rise to near freezing at best. Coastal storm related snow may become moderate at times druing the day. New snowfall 2-to-4 inches by 7 am Sunday.
Sunday: Cloudy and colder. Lows in the low 20's F. Highs near freezing. Snow tapers to flurries by daybreak but a second impulse of energy and colder air overspreads the area from the northwest with steadier light snow again developing by early afternoon. New snow accumulations 1-to-3 inches by 7 am Monday.
Monday: Cloudy and cold with periods of light snow or snow showers tapering off by later afternoon. Lows upper teens, highs 20's F. New snow accumulations by 7 am Tuesday 1-to-2 inches.
Tuesday: Clearing with the cold snap moderating. Cold morning with lows in the teens, quickly warming to around 40 F by afternoon with milder conditions to follow during the week.
Again, my Fearless snowfall amounts are a low confidence forecast at this time. I will update you if I expect any significant changes.
Your Fearless Canaan Weatherman
Great to here the snow forecast for this weekend but wonder if it is enough to improve conditions. I am scehduled to be at Snowshoe Tuesday-Thursday next week. Does anyone have insights on what might be open. Soaring eagle chair is already closed and Silver Creek is down to a few runs. Any thought if they will keep the western territory open after Sunday?

yes yes yes, you are the TRUE fearless weatherman in my opinion! Bob Leffler just upped his totals to 7-14" storm total. Most of it falling by sunday morning. Slackuweather has it a little lower for us though
fishnski wrote:
Oh...one more thing.. if the storm set up with all the potential that showed on the most bullish model run.. it would be an 18, 20 inch event. There was a time or 2 that the storm evaporated from the models but when u watch them as much as some of us do u can catch tendacies .....and hang tough to fcasts...I have to be careful here....I'm not saying it could be 18 to 20 inches...just saying that in the last few days the most bullish model fcasts suggested that.. 10 inches to a foot seems like a good bet (2.5days) but I haven't been watching it for awhile...been a million miles away Kayaking the springs down here at the natures coast of Florida.... I am definetly up at Canaan in Spirit though.....long live the Alpps!
Woot! Woot! Driving up early tomorrow morning!

Soaring Eagle is open today. My guess is that the Western Terr will be open. Conditions should not get worse until later next week.
No chiming in from fishnski on this latest round of snow? Woke up to 6" of fresh, and tonight into tomorrow another 6" is expected! Thank god our skis go uphill!
From the fearless canaan weatherman:
"I am increasing my total snowfall forecast from this 3-day winter storm from the previous 5-to-10 inches to 9-to-12 inches effective immediately. I still expect occasional blizzard conditions to develop Friday night into Saturday noon"
My skis don't go uphill, but if not for the fact that both my parents and my in-laws are in town this weekend I would be up for some boot packing...oh well. Looking forward to whatever pics you are able to provide!

Yeh....this late season cold snap has been well advertised on the GFS model starting a couple of weeks ago....starting with the snow that fell the other day...got on this site a few times to opine on it but decided that I didnt feel like having to study an event that most folks here dont care about..(especially after seeing no buzz here from the snow the other day).I love it..love watching it on the Cams...(looked like a blizzard on SS cam yest late aft/Eve..).....I love watching the Snow level drop and predicting when it will happen but i just kept that to my own amusement.
I was at Rainbow Springs Florida yesterday...another Florida Gem...so im a long way away but always up in the Alpps in Spirit...
the last time I looked at a model was 3 days ago and back then I predicted to myself a 10 inch 3 day event...we look to go over that since we allready got 6....enjoy any snow lovers out there....gonna be a long time till next year!!

I was also a spectator yesterday / last night. My ski buds were txting back and forth. The boathouse has a ton of snow right now.
Here's to a few beers, Pirates VS Reds tonight and peeks at the cams for this evening's snow.
My back yard fire pit this AM - all melted by noon
Wow!...just checking the latest obs at Canaan.....20 degrees with 4 inches the last 3 hours...over an inch an hour!....13.5 inches so far and counting.....(sounding like Reagan).....Timberline....Turn on those lifts!....(thats a lure to get Chaga to post )
Not my tracks... but this was Gandy Dancer at Snowshoe yesterday. Those tracks are well buried by new snow
Why now? Why not then?!!!!!
Maybe just a peek at what's in store for all of the '16 - '17 season!!!
Just seven months to go!!

Wow Carl, that looks like some of the best turns this year. I'd been there but for some family events that conflicted. Ugggh.
